Overview
SIST EN 50645:2018 is a European Standard specifying ecodesign requirements for small power transformers. Developed by CLC, this standard aligns with the EN 61558 series and the European Commission Regulation (EU) No 548/2014, which implements Directive 2009/125/EC on ecodesign requirements. It applies primarily to transformers operating at 50 Hz AC with a rated power of 1 kVA or more, and voltage lower than 1 kV. Transformers rated between 1 kV and 1.1 kV can use this standard as a guiding reference.
The aim of SIST EN 50645:2018 is to reduce the environmental impact of small power transformers by setting mandatory limits on no-load and load losses while ensuring operational efficiency and conformity with EU regulations. It supports the energy efficiency goals of the European Union’s ecodesign framework.
Key features include:
- Compliance criteria for no-load and load losses
- Testing methodologies for type and routine tests
- Mandatory marking and detailed technical documentation requirements
- Guidelines for cooling systems and material specifications
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability:
Covers small power transformers with rated power ≥ 1 kVA, input/output voltage < 1 kV, 50 Hz frequency. Excludes transformers outside regulation scope and may guide transformers up to 1.1 kV.Ecodesign Requirements:
Limits on no-load loss (Po) and load loss (Pk) with a tolerance of ±5% from marked values. These losses are critical factors in transformer efficiency and environmental performance.Testing Procedures:
- Type Tests: Measurement of no-load and load losses under defined conditions.
- Routine Tests: Production level testing verifying no-load losses on each unit.
Marking and Documentation: Transformers must be clearly marked with:
- Rated power
- Load loss and no-load loss values
- Power consumption of cooling systems at no load
- Weight and material type for conductors and cores
Additionally, manufacturers must document this information alongside company identification and model references.
Definitions and Terminology:
Includes key terms such as rated power, rated supply voltage, load loss, no-load loss, and rated ambient temperature to ensure clarity and consistency in implementation.Relationship with EU Regulation:
Provides a presumption of conformity with Commission Regulation (EU) No 548/2014 when this standard is referenced, facilitating regulatory compliance and market acceptance across the EU.
Applications
SIST EN 50645:2018 is essential for manufacturers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies involved with small power transformers used in:
- Electrical power distribution and conversion systems
- Industrial equipment and machinery requiring reliable transformer performance
- Consumer appliances where energy efficiency and reduced environmental impact are priorities
- Design and manufacturing of transformers intended for the European market requiring compliance with ecodesign directives
The standard supports:

3 Terms and definitions
For the purposes of this document, the following terms and definitions apply.
NOTE Unless otherwise specified, the terms “voltage” and “current” imply the r.m.s. values of alternating
voltage and current.
3.1
(power) transformer
static piece of apparatus with two or more windings which, by electromagnetic induction, transforms a
system of alternating voltage and current into another system of voltage and current usually of
different values and at the same frequency for the purpose of transmitting electrical power
[SOURCE: IEV 421-01-01]
Note 1 to entry: The term frequency also implies that the waveform remains the same.
3.2
short-circuit voltage
voltage to be applied to the input winding, when the windings are at ambient temperature, to produce
in the short-circuited output winding a current equal to the rated output current
Note 1 to entry: The short-circuit voltage is usually expressed as a percentage of the rated supply
voltage.
3.3
rated output current
output current at rated supply voltage, rated supply frequency and rated output voltage, at rated power
factor, assigned to the transformer by the manufacturer for the specified operating conditions of the
transformer
3.4
rated supply voltage
supply voltage (for polyphase supply, the phase-to-phase voltage) assigned to the transformer by the
manufacturer for the specified operating conditions
