Overview
EN 13379:2001/FprA1 (CEN) specifies safety and hygiene requirements for key stationary equipment in continuous pasta processing plants producing more than 100 kg/h. The standard covers the spreader, stripping and cutting machine, stick return conveyor and stick magazine used in industrial pasta production. It defines hazards to be addressed, design and manufacturing safety measures, verification and information for safe use. Household machines, semi‑automatic “batch” machines and ancillary non‑integral equipment (e.g. external hoppers) are excluded.
Key topics and requirements
- Scope and application: Applies to stationary pasta machinery in continuous plants (>100 kg/h); not retroactive to machines made before publication.
- Hazard identification: Significant hazards are listed (see clause 4); the standard addresses mechanical, electrical, hygiene and other risks.
- Mechanical safety: Requirements for guards, interlocking devices, protection against entanglement, cutting and crushing hazards.
- Electrical safety and EMC: Requirements align with EN 60204‑1 and cover direct/indirect contact protection, cable routing and electromagnetic compatibility.
- Control and emergency functions: Emergency stop, supply disconnecting devices, safety‑related parts of control systems and prevention of unexpected restarts.
- Hygiene and cleanability: Materials, surface finishes and construction for food‑contact and non‑food areas to support sanitation and minimize contamination (complements EN 1672‑2 hygiene principles).
- Noise and ergonomics: Noise emission assessment and measures to reduce exposure; ergonomic considerations for safe operation and maintenance.
- Verification and documentation: Verification procedures, technical information and marking; user information and warnings for residual risks.
- Normative references updated: Aligns with EN ISO 12100 (type C standard) and cites related standards (e.g., EN 1672‑2, EN ISO 13849‑1, EN ISO 12100, EN 60204‑1, EN 953).
Practical applications and users
Who uses EN 13379:
- Manufacturers and designers of industrial pasta processing equipment
- Machine safety engineers and R&D teams implementing risk reduction

Foreword
This document (EN 13379:2001/FprA1:2012) has been prepared by Technical Committee CEN/TC 153
“Machinery intended for use with foodstuffs and feed”, the secretariat of which is held by DIN.
This document is currently submitted to the Unique Acceptance Procedure.
The first reason for amending the published standard EN 13379:2001 is the revision of the EU-Machinery
Directive 98/37/EC into 2006/42/EC, requiring the adaptation of published European Standards cited in the
Official Journal of the European Union under that Directive.
Additionally, at this occasion the normative references have been updated, while also some other limited
improvements and corrections have been made.
1 Modification to the Foreword
Delete the 5th sentence and replace it with the following:
“For relationship with EU Directive(s), see informative Annex ZA, which is an integral part of this document.”
2 Modification to the Introduction
Delete the existing introduction and replace it with the following:
“This European Standard is a type C standard as stated in EN ISO 12100.
The machinery concerned and the extent to which hazards, hazardous situations and hazardous events are
covered are indicated in the scope of this document.
When provisions of this type C standard are different from those which are stated in type A or B standards, the
provisions of this type C standard take precedence over the provisions of the other standards, for machines
that have been designed and built according to the provisions of this type C standard.
Complementary to the hygiene requirements common to all food processing machines, specific requirements
for cleanability and sanitation of the machines in the scope are formulated.”
3 Correction of the numbering of clauses and sub-clauses
According to CEN rules it is not admissible any more to have in an EN standard a clause that is followed by a
text passage which in turn is then followed by one or several sub-clauses to the aforementioned clause.
In other words:
If there is a "head clause" with several sub-clauses, e.g. a clause 5.1 with sub-clauses 5.1.1, 5.1.2 etc., there
should be no standard text directly below 5.1, but rather in 5.1.1 and 5.1.2 etc.
Therefore the following editorial modifications to EN 13379 are needed:
- Insert a new clause "4.1 General" as a subheading under "4 List of hazards".
- Insert a new clause "4.1.1 General" as a subheading under "4.1 Mechanical hazards".
- Insert a new clause "5.1 General" as a subheading under "5 Safety requirements and/or measures".
- Insert a new clause "5.1.1 General" as a subheading under "5.1 Mechanical hazards".
- Insert a new clause "5.1.5.1 General" as a subheading under "5.1.5 Unexpected start or failure of
emergency device".
- Insert a new clause "5.2.1 General" as a subheading under "5.2 Electrical hazards".
- Insert a new clause "5.6.1 General" as a subheading under "5.6 Protective measures against hazards due
to neglecting of hygienic principles".
- Insert a new clause "6.1 General" as a subheading under "6 Verification".
- Insert a new clause "A.1.1 General" as a subheading under "A.1 Terms and definitions".
- Insert a new clause "A.3.1.1 General" as a subheading under "A.3.1 Connections of internal surfaces".
- Insert a new clause "B.1.1 General" as a subheading under "B.1 Terms and definitions".
The text passages directly following the main headings of each of the above-listed items are to be placed
under the respective new subheadings. The subsequent clauses and sub-clauses, are to be re-numbered
accordingly.
NOTE All of the following modification instructions in this document still refer, however, to the "old" (current) numbering
of EN 13379:2001.
4 Modification to Clause 1, Scope
Delete the last paragraph and replace it with the following:
"This European Standard is not applicable to machines in its scope which are manufactured before the date of
its publication as EN."
5 Modification to Clause 2, Normative references
st
Replace the 1 paragraph with the following:
“The following documents, in whole or in part, are normatively referenced in this document and are
indispensable for its application. For dated references, only the edition cited applies. For undated references,
the latest edition of the referenced document (including any amendments) applies.”
Replace the normative references with the following:
