Overview
SIST EN 2713-011:2009 is a European aerospace standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for single and multicore electrical cables with silver-plated copper screening and specialized jackets. Designed for use in the on-board electrical systems of aircraft, these cables operate reliably at extreme temperatures ranging from -55 °C up to 200 °C. A key feature of this standard is the requirement for cables to be UV laser printable, allowing precise and durable marking essential for aerospace applications. The standard also supports marking by hot stamp or ink jet printing in accordance with EN 3838, ensuring traceability and compliance with identification protocols.
Key Features
- Electrical cable types: Single and multicore cables with 1 to 4 cores, spiral silver-plated copper stranded screening, and protective outer jackets.
- Operating temperature range: Suitable for extreme environments, functioning between -55 °C and 200 °C.
- Materials and construction:
- Core conductors use dispersion fluorocarbon top coat insulation per EN 2266-003.
- Silver-plated copper spiral screen strands meet EN 2083 criteria.
- Outer jacket constructed with polyimide layers coated with fluorocarbon to enable UV laser marking.
- Marking compatibility:
- UV laser printable surface for clear, durable cable identification.
- Also compatible with hot stamp printing and ink jet printing technologies following EN 3838.
- Testing and requirements: Compliant with extensive tests including electrical resistance, insulation, flammability, abrasion resistance, and adherence of plating per EN 3475 series.
- Quality assurance measures: Guided by aerospace quality management and part qualification processes per EN 9133.
Practical Applications
EN 2713-011 cables are essential components in aerospace electrical systems where reliability, precision, and traceability are paramount. Applications include:
- Aircraft wiring harnesses: Ensuring safe, stable power distribution and signal transmission in critical flight systems.
- On-board avionics: Providing robust electrical connections with minimal interference due to effective spiral screening.
- High-temperature zones: Suitable for installation near engines or heat-emitting components where standard cables would fail.
- Maintenance and inspection: UV laser printable surface supports long-lasting, legible markings that improve identification during routine servicing, upgrades, or troubleshooting.
- Custom aerospace builds: The standard's strict material and construction requirements support system designers in conforming to rigorous aerospace regulations.
Related Standards
- EN 3838: Defines requirements and tests for user-applied markings on aerospace electrical cables.
- EN 2266-003: Product standard for ink jet printable general-purpose cables similar in temperature rating but different marking techniques.
- EN 2235: Technical specification for screened and jacketed aerospace cables.
- EN 2083: Product standard for copper and copper alloy conductors used in aerospace cables.
- EN 3475 series: Test methods covering electrical, mechanical, and environmental endurance for aerospace cables.
- EN 9133: Quality management system and qualification procedures for aerospace standard parts.
This standard sets a robust framework for aerospace cable manufacturers and designers seeking to meet advanced electrical performance, environmental resistance, and marking traceability requirements. Its emphasis on UV laser printability and thermal endurance up to 200 °C makes SIST EN 2713-011:2009 a critical reference for high-performance, general-purpose electrical cables in the aviation sector.
