Overview

SIST EN ISO 4254-7:2018/A1:2026 is an amendment to the European and international standard for agricultural machinery safety, specifically focusing on combine harvesters, forage harvesters, cotton harvesters, and sugar cane harvesters. Developed under the auspices of the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this amendment aligns the requirements for these machines with the latest best practices and regulatory directives, enhancing operator safety and addressing newly identified risks in the agriculture sector. It provides harmonization with the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, ensuring compliance throughout the European Union.

Key Topics

  • Safety requirements for rotary elements:

    • Specifications on automatically disengaging rotating functional elements (such as cutterheads and blowers) when operators leave the workstation.
    • Mandatory visual warnings at the workstation if the disengagement does not occur within set time frames.
    • Prescribed maximum run-down times for rotary components to minimize hazards.
  • Service and maintenance operations:

    • Introduction of manufacturer-defined operation modes allowing maintenance with certain active elements, strictly controlled and signalled to the operator.
    • Enhanced operator manual requirements for safe clearing of blockages or disorders.
  • Integration with existing safety management:

    • Use of interlocking guards and control devices in line with ISO 12100, providing mechanical protection and risk reduction.
    • Classification and demarcation of specific operational and servicing risks.
  • Conformity with EU Directives:

    • Confers presumption of conformity with the essential safety and health requirements of Directive 2006/42/EC.
    • Supports market access and legal compliance for harvesting machinery across Europe.

Applications

This amendment is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of agricultural machinery looking to certify their combine harvesters, forage harvesters, cotton harvesters, and sugar cane harvesters against EU and ISO safety standards.
  • Design engineers and safety specialists requiring detailed guidance on the integration of automatic disengagement mechanisms, interlocks, and run-down limitation for rotating elements.
  • Compliance teams and quality assurance tasked with ensuring equipment meets the latest legislative and normative requirements.
  • Agricultural operators and service personnel who benefit from improved operator safety features, more informative manuals, and safer maintenance routines.

The enhancement of automatic disengagement and visual warning systems reduces the risk of operator injury, helping companies fulfill their duty of care and minimize liability. Alignment with regulatory directives also eases access to the EU market and reassures customers regarding product safety.

Related Standards

To support comprehensive safety and functional performance, this amendment references and works in parallel with several important standards, including:

  • ISO 4254-1: Agricultural machinery - Safety - Part 1: General requirements
  • ISO 3600: Operator’s manuals - Content and format
  • ISO 3767 Series: Symbols for operator controls and displays
  • ISO 3776 Series: Requirements for seat belts in agricultural machinery
  • ISO 12100: Safety of machinery – General principles for design – Risk assessment and risk reduction
  • ISO 10975: Safety requirements for auto-guidance systems
  • ISO 5353, ISO 5687, ISO 9533, ISO 11684, ISO 15077: Specifications covering operation, maintenance, audible alarms, hazard pictorials, and operator controls

Compliance with SIST EN ISO 4254-7:2018/A1:2026 reinforces safety, reliability, and legal conformity for agricultural harvesting machinery, supporting innovation and safe technology in the sector.
