Overview

EN 12210:2016 (CEN) specifies the classification of test results for completely assembled windows and doors of any material after wind-load testing performed in accordance with EN 12211. The standard defines wind-load classes, the relationship between test pressures (P1, P2, P3), and how to combine wind load and relative frontal deflection into an overall resistance-to-wind-load classification.

Key facts:

  • Scope: classification of assembled windows and doors after EN 12211 testing.
  • Issued by: CEN/TC 33 (Doors, windows, shutters, building hardware and curtain walling).
  • Applies to any material and complete test specimens.

Key Topics

  • Wind-load classes (Table 1): EN 12210 defines classes 1–5 (and Exxxx for higher pressures). Typical P1 values given are:

    • Class 1: P1 = 400 Pa (P2 = 200 Pa, P3 = 600 Pa)
    • Class 2: P1 = 800 Pa (P2 = 400 Pa, P3 = 1200 Pa)
    • Class 3: P1 = 1200 Pa (P2 = 600 Pa, P3 = 1800 Pa)
    • Class 4: P1 = 1600 Pa (P2 = 800 Pa, P3 = 2400 Pa)
    • Class 5: P1 = 2000 Pa (P2 = 1000 Pa, P3 = 3000 Pa)
    • Exxxx: tested above class 5 with actual P1 value recorded.
  • Pressure relationships: P2 = 0.5 × P1; P3 = 1.5 × P1.

  • Relative frontal deflection (Table 2): Classified into groups (A, B, C). The standard combines this deflection class with wind-load class to form the overall rating (e.g., A3, B2, C5).

  • Performance requirements:

    • For pressures P1 and P2: no visible failures (opening, separations, hardware/glazing bead loss) and the specimen must remain functional.
    • Air permeability after P1/P2 must not exceed the upper limit of the claimed air-permeability class (EN 12207) by more than 20%.
    • EN 1026 air permeability test is required before wind-load testing to determine initial classification.
  • P3 behaviour: Some deformations, bending or cracking of non-detaching parts are permitted provided no parts become detached and the specimen remains closed. Broken glass may be replaced and the test repeated once.

  • Classification rules: Use the highest deflection recorded under positive or negative pressures for each step - averaging is not permitted.

Applications

  • Product specification and selection for architects, facade engineers and manufacturers.
  • Compliance, CE marking support and certification processes within the EU market.
  • Laboratory test reporting and performance labeling for fenestration products.
  • Correlating laboratory results to actual exposure requirements in codes of practice.
