Overview

EN 4611-008:2012 is a CEN product standard in the Aerospace series that defines electrical cables of the XLETFE family with nickel‑plated copper conductors and a dual‑extruded XLETFE insulation system. It covers UV‑laser printable, single- and multi‑core cables intended for on‑board aircraft electrical systems, rated for operating temperatures between −65 °C and 150 °C, and for voltages up to 600 V r.m.s. and frequencies up to 2 000 Hz.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Conductor: Nickel‑plated copper per the XLETFE family requirements.
  • Insulation / Construction: Dual‑extruded Crosslinked Ethylene Tetra‑Fluoro‑Ethylene (XLETFE) - inner and outer extrusions with specified colours (blue outer; some sizes white or light green).
  • Laser markability: Outer insulation of single‑core cables is UV laser printable for durable identification.
  • Size range: Typical size codes in the standard include 002, 004, 006, 010 (nominal 0.25–1.0 mm²; AWG equivalents cited).
  • Electrical ratings: Maximum 600 V r.m.s., maximum 2 000 Hz.
  • Environmental and mechanical performance: Tests and limits include insulation resistance (20 °C and 95 °C), voltage proof, thermal endurance (60 000 h at 150 °C), thermal shock (−65 °C to +260 °C), fluid resistance (maximum 5 % swell), bending/flexure, abrasion and notch propagation requirements. Specific tests are referenced to EN 3475 series test methods.
  • Intended use / protection: Suitable for airframe use. In locations where high vibration, cable flexing and fluid contamination occur (for example undercarriage harnesses), the standard notes use with additional protection measures as appropriate.

Applications and who uses this standard

  • Aerospace designers and electrical harness engineers specifying on‑board wiring for fixed‑wing and rotorcraft platforms.
  • Manufacturers of aircraft wiring, harnesses and cable assemblies requiring durable UV‑markable identification and high resistance to heat, vibration and fluids.
  • Quality, procurement and certification teams ensuring compliance with avionics and airframe electrical wiring standards.
  • Typical application areas: airframe wiring, harness runs exposed to external environments, service areas near landing gear where flexing, vibration and fluid exposure are common.

Related standards

  • EN 4611‑002 (XLETFE family - general requirements)
  • EN 2084 (single‑core technical specification)
  • EN 2235 (single and multicore screened/jacketed cables)
