Fixed resistors for use in electronic equipment - Part 4: Sectional specification: Power resistors for through hole assembly on circuit boards (THT) or for assembly on chassis

This part of IEC 60115 is applicable to fixed power resistors for use in electronic equipment. This standard relates to resistors having a rated dissipation typically greater than 1W up to and including 1000W for use in electronic equipment. This standard is applicable to fixed power resistors with a maximum surface temperature (MET) higher than the preferred upper category temperature (UCT) of 200°C. These resistors are typically described according to types (different geometric shapes) and styles (different dimensions) and product technology. The resistive element of these resistors is typically - protected by a conformal lacquer coating or - cement coating or - vitreous enamel or - a ceramic body or - any other housing, which is to be described in the relevant specification. The electrical connection of these resistors is typically achieved by means of - lead wire terminations or - punched terminals or lug terminals or - push on terminals or - screw terminals or - any other termination, which is to be described in the relevant specification In special cases, a heat sink may be applicable but not mandatory. The object of this standard is to prescribe preferred ratings and characteristics and to select from IEC 60115-1 the appropriate quality assessment procedures, tests and measuring methods and to give general performance requirements for this type of resistor. Test severities and requirements prescribed in detail specifications referring to this sectional specification shall be of equal or higher performance level, because lower performance levels are not permitted

Overview

SIST EN IEC 60115-4:2026/A11:2026 is a European Standard developed by CLC specifying requirements and quality assessment procedures for fixed power resistors used in electronic equipment. This standard is focused on resistors with a rated dissipation above 1W and up to 1000W, specifically designed for either through hole technology (THT) mounting on printed circuit boards or for direct assembly onto chassis. The standard addresses resistors intended to operate at high surface temperatures, often exceeding the standard upper category temperature (UCT) of 200°C.

SIST EN IEC 60115-4:2026/A11:2026 provides a framework for classifying these resistors by their geometry, technology, and protective housing. It outlines preferred ratings, characteristics, and performance requirements, ensuring reliability and safety in critical electronic applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application
    • Covers fixed power resistors with rated dissipation from >1 W up to 1000 W.
    • Defines criteria for resistors intended for high-temperature environments.
  • Product Types and Construction
    • Includes various resistor geometries and construction styles.
    • Allows for different protective coatings such as conformal lacquer, cement, vitreous enamel, ceramic, or other specified housings.
  • Terminations and Assembly
    • Describes standard electrical terminations: lead wires, punched or lug terminals, push-on and screw terminals.
    • Supports both THT mounting and chassis assembly.
  • Performance and Testing
    • Details general performance requirements, drawn from IEC 60115-1.
    • Specifies that only performance levels equal to or above the defined standard are acceptable.
    • Includes testing procedures related to temperature endurance, vibration, solderability, shock, and more, referencing established IEC test methods.
  • Quality Assessment
    • References appropriate inspection and sampling plans to ensure high reliability in manufacturing and deployment.

Applications

Fixed power resistors compliant with this standard are integral for a wide range of industrial, commercial, and specialized electronic systems, including:

  • Power supply units - Providing voltage regulation and current limiting in high-power circuits.
  • Motor drives - Implemented for braking, snubbing, and load balancing.
  • Industrial automation - Used in control panels and relay circuits that demand robust dissipation capabilities.
  • Consumer electronics - Essential in home appliances requiring safe and reliable resistor assemblies.
  • Energy and utility systems - Deployed in grid management hardware, inverters, and renewable energy installations for load balancing.
  • Automotive electronics - Utilized in high-power modules, often exposed to elevated temperatures and mechanical stresses.

The careful selection and installation of compliant resistors ensures device safety, long operational life, and reliability under demanding conditions. Their use supports compliance with European and international quality standards, facilitating market access and interoperability.
