General Information
Overview
EN 16617:2015 - published by CEN - defines performance requirements, testing and marking for corrugated metal hose assemblies used to supply combustible gas. It covers assemblies up to DN 300 for gases of the 2nd and 3rd families (natural gas and LPG, per EN 437) and a maximum operating pressure (MOP) ≤ 16 bar. The standard sets rules for material selection, design, manufacture, testing, marking, documentation, installation instructions and packaging for braided and unbraided corrugated metal hose assemblies.
Important exclusions: assemblies for engines/turbines (PED 97/23/EC), domestic appliance connectors covered by EN 14800, buried gas hoses, assemblies with non‑permanent detachable fittings, and stainless steel pliable tubing kits per EN 15266.
Key Topics
- Scope & Classification: Applies to corrugated metal hose assemblies for gas supply, classified per EN ISO 10380 types (e.g., Type 1‑50, 1‑10, 2‑10) and DN sizing.
- Materials: Specifies suitable materials (stainless steels, copper alloys, malleable cast iron, etc.) referenced to EN product standards to ensure weldability, corrosion resistance and gas compatibility.
- Design & Construction: Requirements for corrugated hose, braid, end fittings, ferrules, gaskets, external protection, minimum bending radius and electrical conductivity.
- Performance Tests: Mandatory tests include pressure resistance, leak‑tightness, high temperature resistance, elongation, impact, burst pressure, pliability/fatigue and electrical conductivity.
- Operational Limits: MOP ≤ 16 bar, DN ≤ 300; temperature derating above 50 °C per EN ISO 10380.
- Marking & Documentation: Permanent marking, labeling and documentation requirements for traceability, safe installation and maintenance.
- Installation & Packaging: Instructions for installation and protective packaging to preserve integrity during transport and storage.
- Conformity Activities: Includes self‑assessment reporting and correspondence with EN ISO 10380 tests.
Applications
Who uses EN 16617:2015 and why:
- Manufacturers of corrugated metal hose assemblies - to design and certify products for combustible gas supply.
- Testing laboratories and conformity assessors - to perform specified tests (pressure, leak, burst, fatigue).
- Gas utilities, installers and system specifiers - to select compliant flexible connectors for buildings, industrial plants and distribution systems.
- Purchasing and safety engineers - to verify marking, documentation, materials and installation instructions for safe operation at specified MOP and temperatures.
Practical notes:
- Always check national regulations and codes of practice in the destination country.
- Do not use EN 16617 assemblies for excluded applications (e.g., buried gas lines or engine connections) - consult the relevant standards.
