Overview

SIST EN 2714-007:2006 is a European standard developed by CEN that defines the product requirements for aerospace electrical cables. Specifically, it covers single and multicore screened (spiral) and jacketed electrical cables designed for the rigorous environment of aircraft on-board electrical systems. These cables are engineered to reliably operate in extreme temperature conditions ranging from -55 °C up to 260 °C. A key feature of these cables is their UV laser printability, which facilitates durable and precise cable identification and traceability in aerospace applications. The standard also permits additional marking methods such as hot stamp printing and ink jet printing, ensuring compliance with EN 3838 for user-applied markings.

Key Topics

  • Cable Construction and Materials:
    • Single to 4-core cables, twisted as per EN 2235, with no filler cores permitted.
    • Nickel-plated copper stranded spiral screen for electromagnetic interference protection, adhering to EN 2083 conductor standards.
    • Outer jacket composed of polyimide coated by fluorocarbon layers, with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) protective layer, designed for durability and chemical resistance.
  • Operating Temperature Range:
    • Cables are suitable for a broad thermal range (-55 °C to 260 °C), ensuring stable performance in harsh aerospace environments.
  • Marking and Identification:
    • UV laser printability enables high-precision and lasting marking on cable jackets.
    • Supports hot stamp and ink jet printing, with all markings aligned to EN 3838 standards for consistent identification in aircraft systems.
  • Performance and Testing Requirements:
    • Compliance with multiple test methods including mechanical, electrical, thermal aging, fire resistance, and chemical resistance per EN 3475-100 and EN 2235.
    • Specific tests cover ohmic resistance, insulation resistance, voltage proof, bending, cold performance, flammability (extinguishing time ≤ 3 seconds), thermal endurance (40,000 hours at 260 °C), and abrasion resistance.
  • Quality Assurance:
    • Production and product quality conform to aerospace quality management qualifications per EN 9133, ensuring reliability and consistency for aerospace-grade cables.

Applications

This standard applies to aerospace electrical cables primarily used for:

  • On-board Aircraft Electrical Systems
    • Power and signal transmission within commercial and military aircraft electrical networks.
  • General Purpose Wiring in Aerospace Environments
    • Cabling where high resistance to temperature extremes, mechanical wear, and electromagnetic interference is essential.
  • Systems Requiring Durable Markings
    • Applications needing traceable and permanent marking solutions for safety, maintenance, and regulatory compliance.

By adhering to EN 2714-007, aerospace manufacturers and suppliers can ensure electrical cables meet stringent industry requirements for safety, reliability, and performance under extreme conditions.
