Overview

EN 2083:2001 - “Aerospace series - Copper or copper alloy conductors for electrical cables - Product standard” is a European (CEN/AECMA) specification for stranded copper and copper-alloy conductors used in aerospace electrical cables. It defines required dimensions, linear resistance, mechanical properties, construction, mass and marking for conductors with nominal cross-sectional areas from 0.15 mm² to 107 mm². The standard excludes conductors for thermocouple extension and fire‑resistant cables.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Materials: Strands made of high‑conductivity annealed electrolytic copper or specified copper alloys. Conductors of 0.15 mm² and 0.25 mm² must use copper alloy.
  • Electrical properties: Linear resistance limits at 20 °C are given; methods for calculating resistance refer to IEC/EN test methods.
  • Mechanical properties: Minimum tensile strength and elongation requirements for copper strands and for specified copper alloys.
  • Construction & lay:
    • Concentric construction up to 9 mm² (code 090) with strand lay length between 8× and 16× the conductor diameter.
    • For 14 mm² to 107 mm² (codes 140–107), concentric or bunched conductors twisted together; strand lay rules and a maximum lay multiple are specified. Outer layer lay must be left‑hand.
  • Plating options: Individual strands may be uncoated (code A) or plated with tin (B), silver (C) or nickel (D). Minimum plating thicknesses are specified in the standard (see clause on metal plating).
  • Joints and compaction:
    • Conductors shall be free from joints; individual strands may include soldered or brazed joints (butt joints required for strand diameter ≥0.25 mm). Distance between strand joints must exceed 3 m.
    • Compaction that deforms strands or damages platings is not permitted.
  • Marking & delivery: Identification on delivery must include reference, length, date and inspection mark. Conductors are delivered on spools/reels, wound uniformly and protected.
  • Test methods: References include EN 3475 test series and IEC publications for resistance and calculation methods.

Applications and users

  • Intended for manufacturers and designers of aerospace electrical cables, wiring harness suppliers, quality/inspection teams, and procurement engineers specifying conductor performance in aircraft, spacecraft and related systems.
  • Use cases include selecting conductor size and construction for signal, power and control lines where strict electrical and mechanical performance, traceability and compatibility with aerospace cable assemblies are required.

Related standards

  • EN 3475 series (Aerospace cable test methods: Part 100, 301, 506, 507)
  • IEC 28 (international standard of resistance for copper)
  • IEC 344 (guide to calculation of resistance of copper conductors)

EN 2083:2001 is a product-level specification that helps ensure consistent, traceable, and tested copper conductor performance for safety‑critical aerospace electrical systems.
