Overview
EN 2346-004:2006 is a CEN aerospace product standard that defines lightweight, fire resistant electrical cables (DN family) for aircraft on‑board electrical systems. It covers unscreened single‑core and multicore assemblies designed for continuous operating temperatures between −65 °C and 260 °C. Single cores are specified to be UV laser printable in accordance with EN 3838 (UV markability for multicore assemblies is optional).
Key SEO terms: EN 2346-004:2006, aerospace cable, fire resistant cable, UV laser printable, operating temperature −65 °C to 260 °C, DN family, light weight cable.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope & purpose: Lightweight, unscreened, fire‑resistant cables for aircraft electrical systems.
- Operating limits: Continuous temperature up to 260 °C, rated voltage 600 V AC, use frequency up to 2 000 Hz.
- Conductor materials: Nickel‑clad copper alloy (for 0.4 mm² code 004) and nickel‑clad copper (for ≥ 0.6 mm² codes 006 and larger); copper requirements referenced to IEC 28.
- Nominal cross sections (DN family): Typical codes and sizes include 004 (0.4 mm²), 006 (0.6 mm²), 010 (1.0 mm²), 012 (1.2 mm²) and 020 (2.0 mm²) with detailed construction and mass/ohmic resistance in the standard.
- Insulation & construction: Insulation materials and dimensioning referenced to EN 2234 and EN 2346‑002; specific colour codes and number of cores per EN 2346‑002.
- Marking: Single cores must support UV laser marking per EN 3838; permanence and contrast tests apply.
- Testing & qualification: Extensive test program (EN 3475 series) including thermal endurance (40 000 h at 260 °C), flammability (extinction time 3 s), thermal shock, dynamic cut‑through, scrape abrasion, wet/dry arc propagation, wet short circuit and electrical/insulation tests. Quality assurance per EN 9133.
Applications
- In‑service and new‑build aerospace electrical harnesses where weight optimization and fire resistance at high temperatures are critical.
- Suitable for avionics, power distribution and on‑board wiring that require UV‑markable single cores for traceability.
- Ideal for aircraft manufacturers, wiring harness suppliers and integrators specifying lightweight, high‑temperature cable solutions.
Who uses this standard
