Overview

ISO 25014:2026 - Paints and varnishes - Coatings on concrete - Determination of film thickness on cross section specifies standardized methods for measuring coating thickness on concrete substrates by cross-section analysis. This international standard, developed by ISO Technical Committee 35 (Paints and varnishes), provides clear guidelines for assessing the film thickness of cured layers in concrete coating systems. Ensuring accurate measurement of film thickness is essential for verifying coating performance, product development, quality control, and compliance within construction and industrial applications.

Key Topics

  • Film Thickness Measurement Techniques: ISO 25014:2026 sets out procedures for preparing concrete samples and determining coating thickness through precise cross-sectional analysis.
  • Sample Preparation: The standard covers steps such as drilling cores from the coated concrete, embedding samples, grinding, and polishing cross-sections for clarity under optical microscopes.
  • Measurement Methods:
    • Method A (Minimum/Maximum Method): Involves determining minimum and maximum thickness values at multiple points and calculating an average.
    • Method B (Average Method): Entails measuring film thickness at equally spaced points along a defined section, resulting in an average value.
  • Equipment Requirements: Outlines the use of cross-section machines, embedding moulds, grinding/polishing equipment, and optical microscopes with thickness measurement software.
  • Reporting Criteria: Specifies essential details for the test report, such as specimen identification, method used, device specifics, results, and any anomalies or deviations from the standard procedure.

Applications

ISO 25014:2026 is crucial for industries involved with:

  • Concrete Floor Coatings: Assessment of film thickness for epoxy, polyurethane, and other protective coatings on concrete floors to ensure durability and compliance with design specifications.
  • Industrial Construction: Routine inspection and certification of coatings for structural or functional performance, especially where layered systems are used for moisture, chemical, or mechanical protection.
  • Quality Control in Manufacturing: Verification of applied or cured coating thickness during product development, batch production, or site application, ensuring adherence to specification tolerances.
  • Coating Evaluation and Claims: Providing standardized measurement data for product evaluation, resolving disputes, and supporting warranty or maintenance claims based on accurate film thickness measurements.
  • Laboratory Testing: Standard reference for testing laboratories performing specialist coating investigations on concrete substrates for research or certification purposes.

Related Standards

Adopting ISO 25014:2026 helps organizations align with additional ISO standards in the paints and coatings sector, including:

  • ISO 4618 - Paints and varnishes - Vocabulary: Provides the necessary terminology for understanding coating systems and measurement methods referenced in ISO 25014:2026.
  • ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1 and Part 2: Outline the general framework for ISO standard development and editorial best practices.
  • Other relevant standards: For different substrate types or alternative thickness determination methods, consult standards under ISO/TC 35 (Paints and varnishes).

Practical Value

By following the guidelines in ISO 25014:2026, practitioners ensure:

  • Reproducible and Comparable Results: Standardized methods yield results that are reliable across organizations and geographic locations.
  • Regulatory and Specification Compliance: Ensures that concrete coatings meet industry, regulatory, or project-specific requirements for coating thickness and performance.
  • Improved Quality Assurance: Robust measurement processes reduce the risk of coating failure, costly rework, or warranty claims.

ISO 25014:2026 is a critical resource for professionals working with coatings on concrete, promoting consistency, safety, and performance in the built environment. For more information or to obtain the standard, visit iso.org.

iv
Introduction
Physical properties of coatings depend strongly on the film thickness. Hence, the knowledge of the film
thickness in a coating system is important for the product development as well as for the application and
evaluation of claims. Determining the film thickness of systems filled with quartz sand can be particularly
difficult. The method specified in this document can help to determine the film thickness of these systems.
The method described in this document is especially used for measuring the film thickness in cured flooring
system build-ups.
