Overview

ISO 5599-1:2001 is an international standard for pneumatic fluid power systems that defines the mounting interface surfaces for five-port, four-way directional control valves without an electrical connector. It applies to valves used up to a maximum rated pressure of 1.6 MPa (16 bar) and is intended to ensure mechanical interchangeability and consistent port identification across manufacturers. The standard specifies dimensional requirements, tolerances, port/orifice identification and the identification of the result of control-mechanism actuation - but does not govern the functional performance of the valves.

Key Topics

  • Mounting interface dimensions and sizes: Defines dimensional requirements and tolerances for six nominal sizes (sizes 1–6) including characteristic dimensions (AB, C, D, G, L, etc.) and orifice areas.
  • Tolerances of form and location: Includes tolerances for feature geometry, position and allowable encroachments on the mounting plane.
  • Surface finish and flatness: Requires surface roughness Ra = 1.6 µm and flatness of 0.1 mm over 100 mm where indicated.
  • Thread and bolt requirements: Specifies threaded mounting fastener sizes and minimum thread depth (minimum thread depth in the base equal to twice the bolt diameter).
  • Port and orifice identification: Standardizes identification of principal flow ports 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and actuation orifices 12 and 14 (port 14 preferred for single-source external solenoid pilot supply). Defines required valve behavior when control signals are applied (e.g., connections between ports when actuated).
  • Monostable valve orientation: Mandates the stable position for monostable valves relative to control mechanism 12.
  • Manufacturer identification statement: Recommended wording for catalogs and test reports to declare conformity to ISO 5599-1:2001.

Applications

ISO 5599-1 is used by:

  • Pneumatic valve manufacturers for designing standardized mounting interfaces to enable product interchangeability.
  • Machine designers and OEMs who require modular manifolds and quick replacement of valve units in industrial automation, packaging, material handling, robotics and process equipment.
  • System integrators and maintenance teams to ensure compatibility between valve modules and base manifolds, reducing downtime and simplifying spares management.
  • Procurement and compliance officers for specifying conformant products and documenting conformity in catalogs and test reports.

Benefits include improved interoperability, simplified maintenance, reduced engineering rework, and consistent port identification across suppliers.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 5599 may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 5599-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 131, Fluid power systems,
Subcommittee SC 5, Control products and components.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 5599-1:1989), which has been technically revised.
ISO 5599 consists of the following parts, under the general title Pneumatic fluid power — Five-port directional control
valves:
— Part 1: Mounting interface surfaces without electrical connector
— Part 2: Mounting interface surfaces with optional electrical connector
— Part 3: Code system for communication of valve functions

Introduction
In pneumatic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a gas under pressure circulating
within a circuit.
The various devices for gas distribution and control can be either mounted directly onto the piping, or mounted on
interface surfaces to allow quicker dismantling and to promote equipment interchangeability.
Pneumatic directional control valves of the five-port, four-way type, as used on mounting interface surfaces
complying with the requirements of this part of ISO 5599, control the flow of compressed gas.
Standardization of port and orifice identification, the result of control-mechanism actuation and a system of
dimensional tolerances are provided to enhance mounting interchangeability of pneumatic control valves used on the
mounting surfaces complying with the requirements of this part of ISO 5599.
