Overview

ISO 10804:2018 is an international standard that specifies design rules and type testing requirements for restrained joint systems used in ductile iron pipelines. These pipelines comply with ISO 2531 and ISO 7186 standards. The purpose of ISO 10804:2018 is to ensure that restrained joints exhibit reliable mechanical strength and leaktightness under various operating conditions, providing safety and durability for water and sewerage pipeline systems.

Restrained joints are assemblies designed to prevent the separation of ductile iron pipe sections, fittings, and other components, which is critical for maintaining pipeline integrity under internal pressure, negative pressure, and dynamic loading. This standard provides manufacturers and engineers with clear guidelines for joint design, validation through rigorous type testing, and documentation, promoting consistent quality and interoperability worldwide.

Key Topics

  • Design Rules

    • Minimum spigot thickness must accommodate welding or attachment loads (e.g., gasket teeth).
    • Safety factors require joints to withstand 1.5 times the allowable operating pressure plus 5 bar.
    • Joints must be able to endure negative internal pressures and cyclic internal hydraulic pressures as part of type testing.
    • Considerations for seismic zones are included, with recommendations to consult specialists for critical locations.
  • Type Testing Procedures

    • Positive internal pressure tests to verify mechanical strength and leak tightness with specific gap configurations between spigot and socket.
    • Negative internal pressure (vacuum) tests to simulate pressure below atmospheric conditions.
    • Dynamic/cyclic internal pressure tests comprising 24,000 cycles between maximum allowable operating pressure (PMA) and PMA minus 5 bar to simulate real-world operational stresses.
    • Tests under deflection and shear load conditions to represent actual pipeline installation scenarios.
    • Required accuracy of pressure gauges and detailed measurement intervals during testing.
  • Test Reporting

    • Comprehensive documentation including joint type, tested nominal diameter (DN), pipe thickness, pressure ratings, angular deflection allowed, and test results to ensure traceability and compliance.
  • Definitions

    • Clear terminology such as “restrained joint,” “allowable operating pressure (PFA),” “maximum allowable operating pressure (PMA),” and “type test” are standardized to ensure consistency in communication.

Applications

ISO 10804:2018 is designed for use in the design, manufacturing, and quality assurance of restrained joints in ductile iron pipeline systems, commonly utilized in:

  • Water supply networks
  • Sewerage and wastewater systems
  • Industrial fluid transport
  • Infrastructure projects in seismic or high-pressure environments
  • Environments involving aggressive soils, requiring protective coatings for joint components

By adhering to ISO 10804:2018, pipeline operators and contractors benefit from enhanced pipeline durability, reduced risk of joint failure, improved leak resistance, and compliance with international best practices, ensuring safe and sustainable pipeline operation.

Related Standards

  • ISO 2531 – Ductile iron pipes, fittings, accessories, and joints for water applications
  • ISO 7186 – Ductile iron products for sewerage applications
  • ISO 6708 – Pipework components – Definition and selection of nominal size (DN)
  • ISO 16631 – Ductile iron pipes, fittings, and joints compatible with plastic piping systems

These interconnected standards provide a comprehensive framework for ductile iron pipeline construction and testing, with ISO 10804:2018 focusing specifically on the design and verification of mechanical joint restraint systems.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
