Overview

ISO 8229:1991 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that defines a comprehensive vocabulary for operations and baths related to dry-cleaning machines. This standard provides clear, bilingual (English and French) definitions of 22 key terms used within the dry-cleaning industry to enhance communication, understanding, and technical consistency among professionals and manufacturers worldwide. It also includes alphabetical indexes for quick reference in both languages.

The primary scope of ISO 8229:1991 is to establish standardized terminology specific to dry-cleaning processes, machinery components, solvent treatments, and operational stages. While some terms may have different meanings in other industries, this standard ensures clarity in the context of dry-cleaning equipment and procedures.

Key Topics

ISO 8229:1991 covers terminology related to various core aspects of dry-cleaning machines and their operation, including:

  • Load and Mass
Definitions for the "dry mass" of articles to be cleaned and the "ratio of the mass" (load-to-volume ratio) help quantify and optimize loading processes.

  • Baths and Solvents
Terms such as "dip" (volume of solvent in the basket), "charged solvent" (solvent with additives and detergent), and "circulating bath" describe solvent management during cleaning cycles.

  • Cleaning Operations
Includes stages and processes such as "pre-wash," "wash," "static bath," "extraction" (solvent removal), and "deodorization" (removal of solvent odors), essential for understanding machine functions.

  • Machine Components
Definitions for "stage" or "load container" (basket/drum) and the enclosing "drum" shell clarify parts of dry-cleaning machinery.

  • Supporting Processes
Terms like "filtration," "filter pre-coat," "distillation" (solvent purification), and "solvent recovery" are critical for maintaining solvent quality and environmental compliance.

  • Additional Procedures
Operations such as "sprinkling" (solvent spraying) and "spray injection" (atomization of finishing chemicals) describe specialized treatments applied during cleaning.

Applications

ISO 8229:1991 serves as a practical reference for:

  • Dry-Cleaning Equipment Manufacturers
Ensuring consistent terminology in design, documentation, training, and marketing materials.

  • Dry-Cleaning Service Providers
Enhancing communication among operators, technicians, and maintenance personnel to optimize machine performance and solvent usage.

  • Technical Training and Education
Providing standard vocabulary for employee training and certification programs related to dry-cleaning technology.

  • Regulatory and Quality Assurance Bodies
Supporting standardization efforts for environmental safety, solvent handling, and process compliance in textile cleaning industries.

  • Research and Development
Facilitating precise reporting and innovation in dry-cleaning methods and machinery.

Related Standards

For a comprehensive understanding of dry-cleaning technology and textile machinery, ISO 8229:1991 can be complemented with related ISO standards, such as:

  • ISO 3758 – Textile care labeling code using symbols, relevant for garment care instructions.

  • ISO 9001 – Quality management systems, important for manufacturers of dry-cleaning equipment.

  • ISO/TC 72 Technical Committee Publications – Covering broader textile and allied machinery standards relevant to cleaning, dyeing, and finishing processes.

Foreword
ISO (the lnternational Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of
national Standards bodies (ISO member bedies). The work of preparing International
Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical committees. Esch member
body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, govern-
mental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO
collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all
matters of electrotechnical standardization.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to
the member bodies for voting. Publication as an International Standard requires
approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 8229 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 72,
Textile machinery and allied machinery and accessories, Sub-Committee SC 4, Dye-
ing, finishing and allied machinery and accessories.
