Overview
ISO 8124-4:2014/Amd 2:2019 is an international standard published by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that focuses on the safety requirements for swings, slides, and similar activity toys designed for indoor and outdoor family domestic use. This amendment updates the original 2014 standard to improve safety provisions concerning the clearance, lateral stability, and impact protection of these play equipment items.
The standard aims to minimize hazards and injury risks related to the use of family domestic playground equipment. It outlines specific safety parameters for various components of swings and similar toys to ensure secure play environments for children.
Key Topics
Minimum Clearance Requirements:
The amendment adjusts minimum clearance distances between adjacent swing elements and between swings and surrounding structures, enhancing safe spacing to prevent collisions and entrapment. It distinguishes between free-swinging, semi-flexible, and rigid swing elements with clear dimension tables for appropriate clearances.Ground Clearance Specifications:
The document sets precise minimum distances between swing elements and the ground surface depending on the crossbeam height. For instance, swings with crossbeams no higher than 1200 mm have special lower clearance limits considering younger children’s use and safety.Lateral Stability:
Lateral stability requirements are refined, particularly exempting swing elements with a single suspension point or rigid suspension from certain stability criteria. This allows for safe design of swings that include different suspension mechanisms.Impact Testing:
The amendment reaffirms the principle of impact testing where swing elements are tested by swinging them against a test mass equipped with an accelerometer. This ensures the forces during impacts remain within safe limits, minimizing injury risks.Illustrative Examples:
The document provides updated diagrams illustrating flat seats and gondola-type swings, detailing components like crossbeams, suspension connectors, couplings, and footrests for clearer understanding of safety provisions.
Applications
ISO 8124-4:2014/Amd 2:2019 serves as a critical reference for:
- Manufacturers of indoor and outdoor domestic swings, slides, and similar activity toys to design products that meet internationally recognized safety benchmarks.
- Product safety engineers to assess and certify the compliance of playground equipment with latest safety stipulations.
- Regulatory authorities and standards bodies to develop national toy safety regulations aligned with international best practices.
- Retailers and consumers seeking assurance that swings and slides available in the market comply with updated safety norms to protect children up to 14 years of age.
- Toy designers and playground equipment developers leveraging the standard's insights to innovate safe yet engaging activity toys for family environments.
Related Standards
ISO 8124-4:2014/Amd 2:2019 forms part of the broader ISO 8124 series addressing toy safety. Other relevant standards in this series include:
- ISO 8124-1: Safety aspects related to mechanical and physical properties of toys.
- ISO 8124-2: Flammability requirements for toys.
- ISO 8124-3: Specification for migration of certain elements (chemical safety).
- ASTM F1148: A related American standard referenced for ground clearance comparison, focusing on playground equipment for children ages 18 months to 10 years.
Together, these standards provide comprehensive guidelines to manufacturers and stakeholders ensuring toys meet high safety criteria for children's use across different age groups and regional markets.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International
organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work.
ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of
electrotechnical standardization.
The procedures used to develop this document and those intended for its further maintenance are
described in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 1. In particular, the different approval criteria needed for the
different types of ISO documents should be noted. This document was drafted in accordance with the
editorial rules of the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2 (see www .iso .org/directives).
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights. Details of
any patent rights identified during the development of the document will be in the Introduction and/or
on the ISO list of patent declarations received (see www .iso .org/patents).
