ISO/FDIS 22161-3 is an ISO draft International Standard in the aerospace series for brazing metallic components with silver alloys. It specifies requirements for furnace, torch and induction brazing, and it is used together with the design/engineering authority’s requirements.

What does ISO/FDIS 22161-3 specify?

ISO/FDIS 22161-3 specifies the requirements for furnace, torch and induction brazing using silver alloys for metallic components. The document is written for aerospace applications, where the design/engineering authority also sets the part-specific requirements that control the brazement.

The document is organized into clauses on scope, normative references, terms and definitions, conformance, joint classification and inspection, brazement design, brazing procedure specification, fabrication, personnel, inspection methods, and acceptance criteria. Annex A provides example forms, and the bibliography points to related aerospace and welding documents.

Annex AExample forms for the BPS and BPQR

What are the key requirements of ISO/FDIS 22161-3?

ISO/FDIS 22161-3 ties production brazing to a qualified brazing procedure, controlled fabrication conditions, qualified personnel, and defined inspection and acceptance criteria. In practice, this means a shop needs a documented procedure, controlled consumables and equipment, and a clear pass/fail basis for joints.

Conformance and joint classes

Clause 4 states that conformance means meeting all provisions of the document except any requirements the design/engineering authority specifically exempts. Clause 5 defines three joint classes and links them to the minimum inspection level.

Class I is for joints whose failure could cause loss of the aircraft/spacecraft or a main component, or a direct hazard to people. Class II covers failures that cause malfunctions but do not compromise continued safe flight until mission end, and Class III covers failures that do not affect safety or transport function. In practice, the class determines how much inspection and testing is needed, and the classification must be stated in the design documents.

Brazement design and procedure qualification

Clause 6 places responsibility for brazement design on the design/engineering authority. The engineering documentation must define any special requirements beyond the general rules, so the brazing shop does not guess at part-specific limits.

Clause 7 requires every brazed joint to be made to a brazing procedure specification (BPS). The BPS has to capture the essential variables in Table 1, and a brazing procedure qualification record (BPQR) records the actual qualification test conditions and results.

Table 1 lists the variables that drive requalification, including joint type, joint clearance, base metal group, material form, thickness, plating, filler metal alloy and form, filler placement, flux use and type, furnace atmosphere, furnace brazing temperature and time, torch gas and flame type, induction coil geometry and controller settings, braze flow direction, flux removal, and post braze heat treatment. For a user, the practical message is simple: if one of these key variables changes beyond the allowed limits, the procedure has to be requalified.

Qualification test brazements and test methods

Clause 7 requires qualification using test brazements that represent the joint type. The document gives standard test piece layouts in Figures 1 to 17, and it allows qualification test pieces or production parts when permitted by the design/engineering authority.

Inspection and testing of those test brazements are set out in Clause 10, and acceptance is in Clause 11. Class I and Class II use visual inspection, radiographic inspection, metallographic inspection, peel test, bend test, and tensile test as applicable; Class III requires visual and dimensional inspection only under the minimum requirements shown in Table 2. In practice, this means the quality plan must match the joint class and the joint type, not just the process used.

Fabrication control

Clause 8 covers consumables, storage, equipment, assembly, and the brazing operation itself. Filler material must be identified by manufacturer, lot number, standard or specification, and certificate, and unusable if identification is lost.

Fluxes must conform to the BPS and be stored clean and dry with shelf life control where applicable. Gases must be clearly marked, and gas quality must meet ISO 11745. This matters because contamination, wrong alloy, or poor gas quality can directly affect wetting, oxidation control, and joint integrity.

Furnace, torch and induction conditions

Clause 8 sets controls for each brazing method. Furnace brazing equipment must be suitable up to 1 050 °C, and vacuum furnace pressure, leak rate, atmosphere composition, and dew point are controlled so the work zone stays suitable for brazing.

Torch brazing uses approved fuels and a neutral to slightly reducing flame, and induction brazing requires coil design that heats the joint area properly. After brazing, assemblies are cooled and cleaned according to the BPS, and post braze heat treatment is limited so it does not remelt the filler metal.

Personnel and inspection

Clause 9 requires brazing coordination personnel with defined authority, brazers and brazing operators qualified to ISO 11745 unless the design/engineering authority says otherwise, and NDT personnel qualified to the applicable NDT standard such as EN 4179. Clause 10 then requires visual inspection of all braze joints and radiographic testing for Class I internal discontinuities.

Clause 11 gives the acceptance basis. It covers surface condition, macroetch results, and internal requirements such as limits on cracks, porosity, unbrazed area, flux entrapment, and incomplete fusion. In practice, the document does not stop at making the joint - it also defines what evidence is needed to accept it.

What terms does ISO/FDIS 22161-3 define?

ISO/FDIS 22161-3 defines a small set of core terms that control how the procedure is managed.

  • Design/engineering authority - the organization responsible for structural integrity, airworthiness maintenance, and conformance with the relevant documents.
  • Preliminary brazing procedure specification (pBPS) - a document that states the required brazing variables before the procedure has been qualified.
  • Brazing procedure specification (BPS) - a qualified document that defines the brazing variables needed for repeatable production brazing.
  • Brazing procedure qualification record (BPQR) - the record of the qualification data gathered from the pBPS tests.
  • Brazing coordination personnel - the people responsible for the quality activities and coordination of brazing work.
  • Radiographic testing (RT) - the radiographic inspection method used to check internal soundness of Class I joints.
  • Non-destructive testing (NDT) personnel - inspection staff qualified under the aerospace NDT standard required by the design/engineering authority.

Who uses ISO/FDIS 22161-3?

ISO/FDIS 22161-3 is used by aerospace manufacturers, brazing shops, quality teams, and engineering organizations that specify or produce brazed metallic components. It is also used by inspectors and NDT personnel who verify joint quality.

In practice, the document supports design/engineering authorities setting joint class and drawing requirements, brazing coordinators controlling procedure qualification, operators performing furnace, torch or induction brazing, and inspectors checking visual, radiographic, destructive, and metallographic evidence. It is relevant wherever brazed joints must be produced and verified under controlled aerospace conditions.

Which standards are used with ISO/FDIS 22161-3?

ISO/FDIS 22161-3 cites several standards that supply test methods, personnel qualification rules, or supporting terminology.

  • ISO/TR 25901-1 - provides the general welding and allied-process vocabulary used in Clause 3.
  • ISO 11745 - supports brazer and brazing operator qualification, and it is also referenced for base metal grouping and gas quality.
  • ISO 14731 - supports the tasks and responsibilities of brazing coordination personnel.
  • ISO 17636 (all parts) - supplies radiographic testing methods for RT.
  • ISO 4136 and ISO 6892 (all parts) - support tensile testing, alongside ASTM E8/E8M and ASTM E21.
  • ISO 5173 - supports bend testing.
  • ISO 18496 - is the flux classification reference used when the BPS identifies flux type.
  • ISO 17927-1 and ISO 17927-2 - support tack welding conditions when tack welds are used in assembly.
  • ISO 24394 - is referenced for qualification of inspection personnel where applicable.
  • EN 4179 - provides the aerospace NDT personnel qualification basis.
  • ASTM E1742/E1742M - provides an alternative radiographic examination practice.
  • SAE AMS 2750 - supports pyrometry and furnace instrumentation control.

What does the ISO/FDIS 22161-3 document contain?

ISO/FDIS 22161-3 contains the full control framework for silver-alloy brazing in aerospace use, including procedure qualification, fabrication controls, personnel qualification, inspection, and acceptance. It gives the BPS/BPQR structure in Clause 7 and the qualification test arrangements in Figures 1 to 18.

It also contains the inspection methods for visual, radiographic, peel, tensile, bend, macroetch, and metallographic examination, plus the acceptance criteria that determine whether a joint is acceptable. Annex A adds example forms for a BPQR and a BPS, which are useful for creating shop documentation without changing the technical requirements.

4 Conformance
When conformance to this document is claimed, all provisions of this document shall be fulfilled, except
those for provisions that the design/engineering authority specifically exempts.
5 Classification and inspection requirements of joints
For the purposes of this document, three classes of brazed joints are defined. This classification shall be
stated in the design documents. If there are no other testing requirements defined by the design/engineering
authority, the minimum amount of testing shall be as follows.
— Class I: A brazed joint whose failure under operating conditions causes the loss of the aircraft/spacecraft
or one of its main components or constitutes a direct hazard to people.
Class I requires visual and dimensional inspection and testing of the sub-surface characteristics: 100 %
of all joints.
— Class II: A brazed joint whose failure causes malfunctions without compromising continued safe flight
until the end of the mission.
Class II requires visual and dimensional inspection, 100 % of all joints.
— Class III: A brazed joint whose failure does not affect the safety and the transport function of the aircraft/
spacecraft.
Class III requires visual and dimensional inspection, 100 % of all joints.

If the design documents do not specify classification and/or inspection requirements, refer to design/
engineering authority.
6 Brazement design
The design/engineering authority is responsible for the design of the brazement and defines the requirements
to ensure conformance with all mission and systems requirements. The engineering documentation shall
clearly define any special requirements, imposed over and above the general requirements.
7 Brazing procedure specification (BPS)
7.1 General
All brazed joints shall be performed in accordance with a brazing procedure specification. A brazing
procedure specification may be used for different production parts. A brazing procedure qualification
record provides test data for assessing the properties of a brazed joint.
The brazing procedure specification (BPS) shall include the information as given in Table 1.
Any format may be used for the BPS, provided all qualification variables and other applicable information
are included. For an example of a BPS, see Figures A.1, A.2 or A.3
7.2 Qualification
a) The actual conditions used in making the test brazement, in accordance with 7.3, and the results of
the required examination and specimen testing shall be recorded on a brazing procedure qualification
record (BPQR). Any format may be used, provided all qualification variables are addressed. For an
example of a BPQR, see Figures A.1, A.2 or A.3.
A BPS may be supported by multiple BPQRs.
b) The qualifying company shall certify that the information on the BPQR is an accurate record of the
tests performed and the test results are in conformance with the qualification variables and testing
requirements of this specification.
c) Test brazements shall not be repaired to meet acceptance requirements.
d) A change of any essential variable beyond that allowed by Table 1 requires requalification of the brazing
procedure specification or an additional brazing procedure qualification covering the changed variables.

4 Conformance
When conformance to this document is claimed, all provisions of this document shall be fulfilled, except those
for provisions that the design/engineering authority specifically exempts.
5 Classification and inspection requirements of joints
For the purposes of this document, three classes of brazed joints are defined. This classification shall be stated
in the design documents. If there are no other testing requirements defined by the design/engineering
authority, the minimum amount of testing shall be as follows.
— — Class I: A brazed joint whose failure under operating conditions causes the loss of the
aircraft/spacecraft or one of its main components or constitutes a direct hazard to people.
Class I requires visual and dimensional inspection and testing of the sub-surface characteristics: 100 % of
all joints.
— — Class II: A brazed joint whose failure causes malfunctions without compromising continued safe flight
until the end of the mission.
Class II requires visual and dimensional inspection, 100 % of all joints.
— — Class III: A brazed joint whose failure does not affect the safety and the transport function of the
aircraft/spacecraft.
Class III requires visual and dimensional inspection, 100 % of all joints.
If the design documents do not specify classification and/or inspection requirements, refer to
design/engineering authority.

A brazing procedure
specification may be used for different production parts. A brazing procedure qualification record provides
test data for assessing the properties of a brazed joint.
The brazing procedure specification (BPS) shall include the information as given in Table 1.Table 1 .
Any format may be used for the BPS, provided all qualification variables and other applicable information are
included. For an example of a BPS, see Figures A.1, A.2 or A.3Figure A.1 , Figure A.2 or Figure A.3
7.2 Qualification
a) a) The actual conditions used in making the test brazement, in accordance with 7.3,7.3, and the
results of the required examination and specimen testing shall be recorded on a brazing procedure
qualification record (BPQR). Any format may be used, provided all qualification variables are addressed.
For an example of a BPQR, see Figures A.1, A.2 or A.3.Figure A.1 , Figure A.2 or Figure A.3 .
A BPS may be supported by multiple BPQRs.
b) b) The qualifying company shall certify that the information on the BPQR is an accurate record of
the tests performed and the test results are in conformance with the qualification variables and testing
requirements of this specification.
c) c) Test brazements shall not be repaired to meet acceptance requirements.
d) d) A change of any essential variable beyond that allowed by Table 1Table 1 requires
requalification of the brazing procedure specification or an additional brazing procedure qualification
covering the changed variables.
