Overview
IEC 61937-5:2002 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the interface for transmitting non-linear Pulse Code Modulation (PCM) encoded audio bitstreams according to Digital Theater Systems (DTS) formats. Specifically, it details the structure, timing, and handling of DTS audio bitstreams of data-types I, II, and III in compliance with IEC 60958 digital audio interfaces. This standard facilitates the seamless transport of DTS encoded audio through digital audio interfaces by mapping DTS frames into non-linear PCM bitstreams, enabling compatibility across consumer and professional audio equipment.
Key Topics
- DTS Bitstream Mapping: IEC 61937-5 specifies the mapping of DTS audio frames onto the IEC 61937-1 interface, ensuring consistency in data transmission format.
- Data-Burst Structure: The standard defines the format of DTS data-bursts including a burst preamble, burst payload (the DTS frame), and stuffing bits to align data with interface timing requirements.
- DTS Data Types: Covers three distinct DTS data-types:
- Type I: Contains 512 samples per encoded channel per frame with a data-type identifier of 0Bh.
- Type II: Contains 1,024 samples per encoded channel per frame with a data-type identifier of 0Ch.
- Type III: Contains 2,048 samples per encoded channel per frame with a data-type identifier of 0Dh.
- Pause Data-Bursts: Defines the use of pause bursts to fill stream gaps and maintain synchronization, with recommended repetition periods depending on data-type.
- Latency and Synchronization: Specifies decoding latency values for DTS bitstreams to assist in synchronization between audio and video streams, crucial in multimedia systems.
- Burst-Info Metadata: Utilizes a 16-bit burst-info field to convey data about the upcoming burst, such as data-type and repetition period, supporting error detection and timing.
Applications
IEC 61937-5:2002 is widely used in applications where DTS audio encoding is transmitted via digital audio interfaces, including:
- Home Theater Systems: Ensures DTS-encoded surround sound audio bitstreams are correctly interfaced between source devices (like Blu-ray players) and audio processors.
- Professional Audio Equipment: Applies to professional digital audio interfaces facilitating high-fidelity DTS transmission for broadcast and production environments.
- Consumer Electronics: Enables compatibility among consumer digital audio devices such as receivers, soundbars, and media players supporting DTS formats.
- Multimedia Synchronization: Provides guidance on handling latency and synchronization issues to maintain lip-sync and audiovisual integrity in cinema and home setups.
- Digital Interface Compliance: Assists manufacturers in designing compliant hardware and firmware to support DTS decoding over IEC 60958 digital audio interfaces.
Related Standards
- IEC 60958 Series: Forms the base digital audio interface standards (including parts 1, 3, and 4) that IEC 61937-5 applies to for consumer and professional use cases.
- IEC 61937-1: Provides general rules for non-linear PCM encoded audio bitstream transport, defining burst formatting that IEC 61937-5 extends specifically for DTS.
- IEC 61937-2: Defines burst information structure referenced by IEC 61937-5 for uniform data description.
- DTS Specification Documents: Referenced for detailed DTS bitstream encoding parameters beyond the scope of transport and interface rules.
- ISO/IEC MPEG Standards: Represent complementary multimedia encoding standards co-developed with IEC to promote interoperability in digital audio/video systems.
