Overview
IEC 60364-7-740 is an international standard published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that defines the minimum electrical installation requirements for temporary electrical installations related to structures, amusement devices, and booths at fairgrounds, amusement parks, and circuses. The document focuses on ensuring the safe design, installation, and operation of mobile, temporary, or permanently installed electrical machines and structures intended for repeated installation without compromising safety.
This standard supplements and modifies general electrical installation rules to address the specific challenges and risks involved in temporary and mobile setups at public entertainment venues. It excludes the electrical equipment of machines, which is covered by other standards such as IEC 60204-1.
Key Topics
Scope and Definitions: Covers temporary installations and their intended use in leisure and entertainment environments. Defines key terms like fairgrounds, booths, stands, and amusement devices, emphasizing their mobility and temporary nature.
Voltage and Supply Requirements: Specifies that nominal supply voltages in these installations should not exceed 230/400 V AC, with strict rules preventing the interconnection of phases and neutrals from different supply sources.
Protection Against Electric Shock:
- Mandatory use of Residual Current Devices (RCDs) with rated residual operating currents not exceeding 30 mA for final lighting circuits, socket outlets, and portable equipment.
- Prohibits protection by obstacles or placing electrical parts out of reach, instead requiring physical isolation and protective measures against both direct and indirect contact.
- Details on protective earthing, supplementary equipotential bonding, and isolation methods tailored for the presence of animals and outdoor environments.
Fire Protection: Requirements include fitting motors with manually reset protective devices against excess temperature to prevent fire hazards, especially for unsupervised automatic or remotely controlled motors.
Selection and Erection of Equipment:
- Use of key- or tool-operated enclosures for switchgear, except for those accessible to ordinary persons.
- Flexible, armoured, or mechanically protected cables meeting IEC fire performance standards (IEC 60332-1 and optionally IEC 60332-3 or IEC 61034 for low-smoke cables).
- Restrictions on cable joints, requiring enclosures with protection not less than IP4X.
- Clear identification and accessibility of isolation devices, which must disconnect all active conductors including the neutral.
Lighting and Decorative Installations: Stress on secure attachment of luminaires and decorative chains with strict rules preventing weight being carried by supply cables and protection against accidental contact or fire risks.
Applications
IEC 60364-7-740 applies primarily to:
- Temporary and Mobile Electrical Installations for:
- Amusement rides and devices at fairgrounds and amusement parks.
- Temporary booths and stands used for entertainment or commercial purposes.
- Structures and tents commonly found in circuses or outdoor leisure events.
The standard ensures safe electrical practices in environments characterized by:
- Frequent assembly and disassembly of electrical installations.
- Exposure to outdoor conditions, including the presence of animals.
- High public occupancy and interaction with mobile electrical equipment.
- Variable power supply configurations with safety-critical isolation needs.
Implementing this standard helps operators, engineers, and contractors reduce electrical hazards such as electric shock, fire, and equipment failure, supporting compliance with international safety best practices.
Related Standards
IEC 60364-7-740 references and complements a range of international standards that address specific aspects of electrical safety and equipment technical requirements in temporary or mobile setups:
- IEC 60204-1: Safety of machinery - Electrical equipment of industrial machines.
- IEC 60364 (Parts 3, 4, 5): General electrical installation requirements, protection against electric shock, earthing arrangements, and wiring practices.
- IEC 60038: Standard voltages.
- IEC 60332-1 and IEC 60332-3: Fire testing of cables.
- IEC 60947-2 and IEC 61008-1 / IEC 61009-1: Requirements for circuit-breakers and residual current devices.
- IEC 61558-2-6: Safety isolating transformers.
- IEC 62020: Residual current monitors.
- CEN TC 152: Safety of non-permanent structures and equipment for fairgrounds and amusement parks (non-electrical safety).
Adhering to IEC 60364-7-740 along with these complementary standards ensures a comprehensive approach to electrical safety in dynamic, temporary entertainment settings.
Keywords: IEC 60364-7-740, temporary electrical installations, amusement devices, fairground electrical safety, residual current devices, electrical protection, electrical installation standards, IEC electrical standards, mobile electrical equipment, amusement park wiring safety.
