IEC 62368-1:2023 is available as IEC 62368-1:2023 RLV which contains the International Standard and its Redline version, showing all changes of the technical content compared to the previous edition.IEC 62368-1:2023 is a product safety standard that classifies energy sources, prescribes safeguards against those energy sources, and provides guidance on the application of, and requirements for, those safeguards. The prescribed safeguards are intended to reduce the likelihood of pain, injury and, in the case of fire, property damage. The objective of the introduction is to help designers to understand the underlying principles of safety in order to design safe equipment. These principles are informative and not an alternative to the detailed requirements of this document.

IEC TR 62368-2:2019 provides explanatory information related to IEC 62368-1. Only those subclauses considered to need further background reference information or explanation of their content to benefit the reader are included. Therefore, not all numbered subclauses are cited. Unless otherwise noted, all references are to clauses, subclauses, annexes, figures or tables located in IEC 62368-1:2018. This third edition updates the second edition of IEC 62368-2 published in 2014 to take into account changes made to IEC 62368-1:2014 as identified in the Foreword of IEC 62368-1:2018. This Technical Report is informative only. In case of a conflict between IEC 62368-1 and IEC TR 62368-2, the requirements in IEC 62368-1 prevail over this Technical Report.

IEC 62368-1:2018 is applicable to the safety of electrical and electronic equipment within the field of audio, video, information and communication technology, and business and office machines with a rated voltage not exceeding 600 V. This document does not include requirements for performance or functional characteristics of equipment.
This is a product safety standard that classifies energy sources, prescribes safeguards against those energy sources, and provides guidance on the application of, and requirements for, those safeguards.
The prescribed safeguards are intended to reduce the likelihood of pain, injury and, in the case of fire, property damage.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2014. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
– addition of requirements for outdoor equipment;
– new requirements for optical radiation;
– addition of requirements for insulating liquids;
– addition of requirements for work cells;
– addition of requirements for wireless power transmitters;
– addition of requirements for fully insulated winding wire (FIW);
– alternative method for determination of top, bottom and side openings for fire enclosures;
– alternative requirements for sound pressure.
This group safety publication is primarily intended to be used as a product safety standard for the products mentioned in the scope, but shall also be used by technical committees in the preparation of standards for products similar to those mentioned in the scope of this standard, in accordance with the principles laid down in IEC Guide 104 and lSO/lEC Guide 51.
The contents of the corrigendum of April 2020 have been included in this copy.

IEC 62368-3:2017 applies to equipment intended to supply and receive operating power through communication cables or ports. It covers particular requirements for circuits that are designed to transfer DC power from a power sourcing equipment (PSE) to a powered device (PD).
The power transfer uses voltages at ES1 or ES2 or in very specific cases voltage levels at ES3.
Any cable provided with a connector defined by an industry standard that permits DC power transfer between equipment is considered a communication cable even if communication does not take place. For example, a USB cable can be used just to recharge a portable device battery.
This International Standard is to be used in conjunction with IEC 62368-1:2014.
It has the status of a group safety publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.
The subclauses of IEC 62368-1 apply as far as reasonable. Where safety aspects are similar to those of IEC 62368-1, the relevant clause or subclause of IEC 62368-1 is given for reference in a note in the relevant subclause. Where a requirement in IEC 62368-3 refers to a requirement or criterion of IEC 62368-1, a specific reference to IEC 62368-1 is made.

IEC 62949:2017 applies to the interface of equipment designed and intended to be connected as a communication terminal to an information and communication technology (ICT) network termination.
This document does not apply to:
- equipment covered by IEC 62368-1; or
- interfaces to other networks.
This document specifies the safety requirements of the interface to the ICT network only. Requirements additional to those specified in this document may be necessary for equipment intended for operation while exposed, for example, to extremes of temperature, to excessive dust, moisture, or vibration, to flammable gases, to corrosive or explosive atmospheres and electro medical applications with physical connections to the patient. The following requirements are not covered by this document:
- functional safety of equipment;
- functional reliability of equipment;
- communication facilities with remote supply using hazardous voltage;
- protection of equipment connected to ICT networks from functional damage.

IEC 60990:2016 defines measurement methods for d.c. or a.c. current of sinusoidal or non-sinusoidal waveform, which could flow through the human body, and current flowing through a protective conductor. The measuring methods recommended for TOUCH CURRENT are based upon the possible effects of current flowing through a human body. In this standard, measurements of current through networks representing the impedance of the human body are referred to as measurements of TOUCH CURRENT. These networks are not necessarily valid for the bodies of animals. The specification or implication of specific limit values is not within the scope of this standard. IEC TS 60479 series provides information regarding the effects of current passing through the human body from which limit values may be derived. This standard is applicable to all classes of EQUIPMENT, according to IEC 61140. The methods of measurement in this standard are not intended to be used for TOUCH CURRENTS having less than 1 s duration, patient currents as defined in IEC 60601-1, a.c. at frequencies below 15 Hz, and currents above those chosen for ELECTRIC BURN limits. This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 1999. It constitutes a technical revision. The principal changes in this edition as compared with the second edition are as follows:
- the effects names have been updated to reflect increased understanding of the range of effects and is in concert with present usage;
- the conditions of use invoking a GRIPPABLE PART have been reduced in the application of the requirements based upon the current understanding of this effect;
- the references to ISO 10012-1, which has been replaced by management standard of the same number, have been replaced with explanatory text, where needed to maintain the sense of the document;
- former informative Annex H (GRIPPABLE PART) has been deleted from this update as it does not properly represent the full set of conditions under which immobilization can occur. A new informative Annex H (Analysis of frequency filtered touch current circuits measurement) has been added and the Bibliography (formerly Annex M) has been updated with additional references for completeness.
This basic safety publication is primarily intended for use by technical committees in the preparation of standards in accordance with IEC Guide 104 and ISO/IEC Guide 51. It is not intended for use by manufacturers or certification bodies independent of product standards.
It has the status of a Basic Safety Publication in accordance with IEC Guide 104.

IEC 62911:2016 defines routine electrical safety test procedures for use during or after manufacturing of complete equipment, sub-assemblies or components, complying with IEC 60065, IEC 60950-1 or IEC 62368-1 and powered by an a.c. mains supply or d.c. mains supply, to detect manufacturing failures and unacceptable tolerances in manufacturing and materials. All the tests defined in this standard do not necessarily have to be performed at the end product manufacturing location. The optimal location for the routine electrical safety tests can be defined by the equipment manufacturer and reviewed under the conformity assessment scheme.
