Overview
IEC 60335-2-9:2008/AMD2:2016 is an amendment to the international standard focused on the safety of household and similar electrical appliances, specifically targeting grills, toasters, and similar portable cooking devices. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment enhances the existing requirements to ensure safer design, operation, and testing of these appliances. It addresses particular safety characteristics related to heating elements, protection against electrical hazards, and operational stability under normal and abnormal conditions.
Key Topics
Amendment Scope and Purpose
This amendment outlines specific provisions and clarifications for the safety requirements applicable to grills, toasters, and portable cooking appliances. It refines test conditions, marking, and operational parameters to align with latest safety practices.Heating Units and Operational Controls
The amendment replaces the term “heating elements” with “heating units” and specifies testing conditions for induction hot plates, involving cooking oil heated to precise temperatures, as well as the operation of induction hotplates and wok hotplates at rated voltage rather than just power input.Marking and Identification
Cooking zones on hot plates must be clearly marked to ensure user awareness and safety. Visibility of operational parts is critical for safe appliance usage.Protection Against Electrical Hazards
Special exceptions are introduced for toasters regarding heating element switching devices, where full disconnection or specific clearance requirements are not mandatory, improving design flexibility without compromising safety.Temperature Rise Limits and Surface Safety
Maximum allowable temperature rises on external surfaces and heated cavities are explicitly defined to reduce the risk of burns during appliance use.Abnormal Operation and Mechanical Strength
Detailed testing procedures under abnormal operating conditions ensure appliances remain safe under potential fault scenarios. Mechanical strength assessments, including heating unit guards, are reinforced to promote durability and user protection.Testing Enhancements for Induction Appliances and Barbecues
Additions specify procedures for operating induction hotplates with both cooking oil and water, simulating realistic cooking conditions. Barbecue tests now include an aluminum plate to simulate real-use heat distribution scenarios.
Applications
Consumer Safety Assurance
Manufacturers of grills, toasters, and portable cooking appliances can utilize this standard amendment to align products with internationally recognized safety benchmarks, reducing risk of electrical shock, fire, or burns.Product Design and Development
Electrical appliance designers benefit from clear definitions on heating units, control mechanisms, and protective measures which foster safer, more reliable appliance innovations.Testing and Certification
Testing laboratories adopt the prescribed test conditions and marking requirements to certify appliances meet safety standards, facilitating international market acceptance.Quality Control and Compliance Monitoring
Compliance teams can leverage these guidelines to monitor product safety throughout manufacturing and distribution phases effectively.
