Overview
IEC 60335-2-31:2012/AMD1:2016 is an important amendment to the international safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances, specifically focused on range hoods and cooking fume extractors. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment updates particular requirements to enhance the safety, marking, and construction of these kitchen appliances. It addresses critical aspects like lamp usage, protective shielding, and temperature limits to ensure consumer safety and equipment reliability.
This amendment complements the base standard IEC 60335-2-31:2012 by incorporating additional safety instructions, normative references, and construction mandates that manufacturers and testing agencies must follow. It reflects contemporary safety practices and technological advances in the design and use of lamps in range hoods, which are an essential component in domestic kitchens for air quality and fire safety.
Key Topics
Lamp Marking and Instructions:
The amendment mandates detailed marking on or near lampholders, especially when the lamp voltage is lower than the appliance rating. It requires clear labeling for range hoods designed for use only with self-shielded tungsten halogen lamps or self-shielded metal halide lamps. Important symbol instructions include:- "Use only with self-shielded tungsten halogen lamps or self-shielded metal halide lamps"
- "Replace any cracked protective shield"
Protective Shields:
Range hoods incorporating tungsten halogen or metal halide lamps must be equipped with protective shields, with glass shields mandatory for tungsten halogen lamps. This requirement does not apply when only self-shielded lamps are used, enhancing operational safety by preventing lamp glass breakage hazards.ILCOS Lamp Coding System Integration (IEC 61231):
The amendment incorporates the International Lamp Coding System (ILCOS), requiring detailed lamp specifications such as type, shape, wattage, voltage, lamp cap type, and nominal dimensions to be stated clearly in the instructions. This standardization facilitates proper lamp replacement and reduces the risk of inappropriate or unsafe lighting elements being used.Temperature Testing:
Temperature rises of lampholders and enclosures must be measured with the fan motor off and lights on. The amendment excludes a 35 mm radius around the lamp glass from temperature measurement to account for heat variations near the lamp.Visibility and Size of Safety Markings:
Safety symbols related to lamp use and shield replacement should be at least 15 mm high and remain visible during lamp replacement or regular use, ensuring users are constantly informed about critical safety precautions.Installation Restrictions:
The standard specifies that if a range hood is only intended for installation over hobs with up to four cooking elements, this must be indicated in the instructions, ensuring correct appliance application.
Applications
This amendment applies directly to manufacturers, designers, testing laboratories, and regulatory authorities involved in the production, certification, and compliance verification of range hoods and cooking fume extractors. Key practical benefits include:
- Ensuring consumer safety through improved lamp compatibility and warning indicators.
- Reducing fire risk and electrical hazards related to overheating and the use of inappropriate lighting components.
- Facilitating easier and safer lamp replacement with standardized, clear instructions based on the ILCOS coding.
- Ensuring compliance with international safety norms to support global market access for electrical kitchen appliances.
- Helping installers and users understand appliance limitations and proper operating conditions.
Households, commercial kitchens, and appliance retailers benefit from the enhanced safety features and reliability established by this IEC amendment.
