Overview

IEC 60335-2-31:2002/AMD2:2008 is an important amendment to the international standard focused on the safety requirements for household and similar electrical appliances, specifically addressing range hoods and other cooking fume extractors. Published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), this amendment refines existing safety protocols to enhance the protection of users and ensure safer appliance installations and operation. It applies to electric range hoods and fume extractors designed for household cooking appliances with rated voltages up to 250 V.

This amendment clarifies additional safety provisions, test conditions, marking requirements, and construction guidelines, emphasizing practical safety measures for kitchens equipped with cooking devices that generate fumes, oils, and heat.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Covers electric range hoods and cooking fume extractors installed above, beside, behind, or under household cooking ranges, hobs, and similar appliances operating at a voltage not exceeding 250 V. It incorporates specific requirements supplementing the general safety rules outlined in Part 1 of the IEC 60335 series.

  • Safety for Vulnerable Users
Acknowledges protection considerations for individuals, including children or persons with physical, sensory, or mental disabilities, who might not safely operate the appliances without supervision or instruction.

  • Down-Draft Systems
Defines these as ventilation systems that draw vapors downward into ducts either for recirculation or external exhaust. Additional test provisions at elevated ambient temperatures (40 °C ± 2 °C) apply to ensure reliability under real-world kitchen conditions.

  • Installation and Marking Instructions
Specifies minimum installation distances-such as maintaining at least 65 cm between gas hobs and the lowest part of a range hood unless otherwise instructed by the gas appliance manufacturer. Includes warning labels cautioning users about hot accessible parts during use.

  • Heating, Moisture Resistance, and Fire Safety
Establishes limits on temperature rises in various components, with reduced thresholds for down-draft systems. Details rigorous moisture resistance tests, including exposure to saline water sprays to simulate kitchen humidity and grease conditions. Fire resistance tests have been enhanced with updated classifications ensuring better safety against heat-related hazards.

Applications

  • Household Kitchens
This standard amendment is essential for manufacturers and installers involved with domestic cooking appliances featuring range hoods or fume extraction units. It ensures user safety by regulating electrical, mechanical, and thermal performance under typical cooking conditions.

  • Cooking Ventilation Design
Useful for engineers and product developers designing ventilation systems which integrate with household cooking setups. Ensures compliance in assembly, wiring, and operating environment considerations.

  • Safety Certification and Testing
Testing organizations and certification bodies depend on this amendment to validate compliance during product assessment phases, enhancing consumer confidence in cooking ventilation products.

  • Regulatory Adoption
National committees are encouraged to implement this amendment within 12 to 36 months after publication, allowing manufacturers transition time to update designs and testing procedures accordingly.

Related Standards

  • IEC 60335 Series
The general standard on household electrical appliance safety, of which Part 2-31 is a particular safety requirement supplement.

  • ISO 13732-1
Relevant for evaluation of human responses to hot surfaces; complements thermal safety requirements referenced in this amendment.

  • IEC 60417
Pertains to graphical symbols for use on equipment, including safety markings for electrical appliances.

  • IEC 60529
Defines degrees of protection provided by enclosures to verify moisture resistance relevant to appliance durability.

___________
Title
Replace the title by the following:
HOUSEHOLD AND SIMILAR ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES –
SAFETY –
Part 2-31: Particular requirements for range hoods and other cooking
fume extractors
INTRODUCTION
Replace the fifth paragraph by the following:
When a part 2 standard does not include additional requirements to cover hazards dealt with
in Part 1, Part 1 applies.
NOTE 1 This means that the technical committees responsible for the part 2 standards have determined that it is
not necessary to specify particular requirements for the appliance in question over and above the general
requirements.
60335-2-31 Amend. 2 © IEC:2008 – 3 –
This standard is a product family standard dealing with the safety of appliances and takes
precedence over horizontal and generic standards covering the same subject.
NOTE 2 Horizontal and generic standards covering a hazard are not applicable since they have been taken into
consideration when developing the general and particular requirements for the IEC 60335 series of standards. For
example, in the case of temperature requirements for surfaces on many appliances, generic standards, such as
ISO 13732-1 for hot surfaces, are not applicable in addition to Part 1 or part 2 standards.
1 Scope
Replace the second paragraph by the following:
This International Standard deals with the safety of electric range hoods and other cooking
fume extractors intended for installing above, beside, behind or under household cooking
ranges, hobs and similar cooking appliances, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V.
Replace the two dashed items in the fourth paragraph by the following:
– persons (including children) whose
• physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or
• lack of experience and knowledge
prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
– children playing with the appliance.
3 Definitions
Add the following new definition:
3.102
down-draft system
a ventilation system intended for installation adjacent to household cooking ranges, hobs and
similar cooking appliances that draws vapour down into an internal exhaust duct
NOTE The filtered air may be discharged back into the room or ducted away.
5 General conditions for the tests
Add the following subclause:
5.7 Addition:
For down-draft systems, the tests specified in Clauses 11 and 13 are carried out at an
ambient temperature of 40 °C ± 2 °C.
Add the following new subclause:
5.101 Down-draft systems intended to be installed above the cooking surface are tested as
specified for range hoods.
7 Marking and instructions
7.1 In the addition, replace “5012 of IEC 60417-1” by “IEC 60417-5012 (2002-10)”.
7.12 Add the following dashed item:

– 4 – 60335-2-31 Amend. 2 © IEC:2008
– CAUTION: Accessible parts may become hot when used with cooking appliances.
7.12.1 Replace the second dashed item by the following:
– the minimum distance between the supporting surface for the cooking vessels on the hob
and the lowest part of the range hood. (When the range hood is located above a gas
appliance, this distance shall be at least 65 cm. If the instructions for installation for the
gas hob specify a greater distance, this has to be taken into account. The distance of
65 cm can be reduced for
– non-combustible parts of range hoods, and
– parts operating at safety extra low voltage,
provided these parts do not give access to live parts if deformed).
