Overview
IEC 61196-1-304:2011 is an international standard developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) that specifies the mechanical test method for assessing the impact resistance of coaxial communication cables. This standard forms part of the broader IEC 61196 series focusing on coaxial communication cables and provides a systematic approach to evaluating cable durability against mechanical impacts. The test method defined within enables manufacturers, testers, and engineers to ensure the mechanical robustness and reliability of coaxial cables in various application environments.
Key Topics
- Scope of Testing: IEC 61196-1-304 details the procedure to determine how well coaxial cables withstand mechanical impacts without damage or loss of functionality.
- Sample Preparation: Cable samples must have sufficient length and be properly terminated-either with connectors or clamped to represent actual usage conditions.
- Test Equipment: Involves using a drop weight apparatus where a cylindrical mass (brass or steel) with a rounded striking edge is dropped onto the cable affixed to a flat base.
- Test Procedure: The method includes pre-conditioning the cable sample to a specified temperature followed by controlled impacts at defined points using specified drop heights and weights to simulate real-world impact forces.
- Reporting Requirements: The test report must document key parameters such as the number of impacts, weight and diameter of the drop weight, test temperature, impact locations, sample length, and observed results.
- Conformance Criteria: Test outcomes are measured against the requirements specified in the detailed cable specification relevant to each coaxial cable type.
Applications
IEC 61196-1-304:2011 is essential for:
- Cable Manufacturers: To validate the physical durability and mechanical integrity of coaxial communication cables during product development and quality control processes.
- Telecommunications Industry: Ensures cables deployed in harsh environments or exposed to mechanical stresses maintain operational performance.
- Testing Laboratories: Standardizes impact resistance testing procedures for repeatable and comparable results across the industry.
- Procurement Specifications: Assists in defining acceptance criteria for cables used in infrastructure installations, broadcast, data networks, and other communication systems.
- Compliance and Certification: Provides a standardized mechanical test method that complements electrical performance requirements, supporting conformity assessment and market acceptance.
Related Standards
- IEC 61196-1: Generic specification for coaxial communication cables covering general definitions and requirements - IEC 61196-1-304 builds upon these foundational elements for mechanical testing.
- Other parts of the IEC 61196 series: Address additional mechanical, electrical, and environmental test methods designed for coaxial cables, including flexibility, tensile strength, and environmental resistance tests.
- ISO/IEC Directives: The drafting and structure of this standard adhere to international directives ensuring consistency and harmonization with complementary standards worldwide.
By following IEC 61196-1-304:2011, stakeholders can ensure the impact resistance of coaxial cables is quantified in a controlled, reliable manner, promoting enhanced product confidence and supporting robust communication infrastructure deployment. Keywords such as coaxial communication cables, impact resistance, mechanical test methods, and IEC standards are integral to this document’s practical application for professionals in telecommunications, cable manufacturing, and testing sectors.

1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable
