Overview

IEC 60966-2-4:2003 is an international standard specifying the detailed requirements for radio frequency and coaxial cable assemblies designed for radio and TV receivers. It addresses cable assemblies operating within the frequency range of 0 to 3,000 MHz and specifically applies to flexible coaxial cables described in IEC 60096-2, focusing on cable subfamily 9,52. This standard uses IEC 61169-2 connectors, which are radio frequency coaxial connectors commonly employed in broadcasting and consumer electronics.

Developed by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC), IEC 60966-2-4 aims to ensure that cable assemblies meet stringent electrical, mechanical, and environmental performance criteria, fostering compatibility, reliability, and quality in RF signal transmission for radio and television applications.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Application
Covers flexible coaxial cable assemblies suitable for radio and TV receivers, compliant with IEC 60096-2 standards and connector type IEC 61169-2 (9.52 mm interface).

  • Frequency Range
Cable assemblies conform to operational requirements from 0 Hz up to 3,000 MHz, ensuring adequate performance across broadcast and TV signal frequencies.

  • Connector and Cable Details
Utilizes IEC 61169-2 connectors (straight and right-angled plugs and sockets) paired with IEC 61196-6 type cables or equivalent, ensuring standardization in connector interfaces.

  • Electrical Characteristics

    • Reflection properties with specified minimal return loss across frequency bands (e.g., >20 dB from 5 MHz to 400 MHz).
    • Operational attenuation (insertion loss) less than 0.08 + 0.4 dB/m up to 1 GHz, ensuring signal integrity.
    • Screening effectiveness classified under IEC 61196-1’s Class A or B for transfer impedance and screening attenuation to minimize interference.
    • Voltage proof testing at 1.0 kV at 50 Hz peak for insulation reliability.
  • Mechanical Performance

    • Tensile strength testing ensuring cable durability with a minimum of 45 N for one minute.
    • Endurance tests including flexure, flexing cycles, and crushing forces, simulating real-life handling and installation stresses.
    • Minimum bending radius specifications to preserve cable integrity under static (25 mm) and dynamic (75 mm) bending.
  • Test Methods and Quality Control

    • Visual and dimensional inspection on every production lot.
    • Routine reflection, insertion loss, voltage proof, and insulation resistance tests.
    • Periodic endurance tests such as flexing and crushing scheduled at defined intervals to maintain long-term quality.
    • Conformance to sampling plans based on IEC 60410 for acceptance and rejection criteria.

Applications

IEC 60966-2-4 compliant coaxial cable assemblies are critical components for:

  • Broadcasting Equipment
Ensuring reliable signal transmission between antennas, tuners, and receivers in radio and television systems.

  • Consumer Electronics
High-quality cables in TV sets, radios, and set-top boxes to maintain signal clarity and reduce interference.

  • Installation in Residential and Commercial Settings
Suitable for feeder cables between distribution outlets and receivers, adhering to specified mechanical and electrical standards for consistent performance.

  • Test and Measurement
Employing standardized assemblies for equipment calibration and RF testing, guaranteeing repeatable and accurate results.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two
organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical specifications, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National
Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
