Overview
EN 60335-2-74:2003/A1:2006 is a European harmonized standard under the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) framework that specifies safety requirements for portable immersion heaters used in households and similar applications. This amendment to the original EN 60335-2-74:2003 standard was approved by CENELEC in June 2006 and includes updates to enhance the safe operation and mechanical integrity of these electrical appliances.
This standard aligns with the IEC 60335-2-74:2002/A1:2006 international regulations and aims to minimize risks associated with electric shock, fire, and mechanical hazards in everyday use. It also addresses abnormal operating conditions, including electromagnetic phenomena that may affect appliance safety.
Key Topics
- Safety Requirements: Focuses on protection against electrical hazards and fire risks related to immersion heaters.
- Mechanical Strength: Details on mechanical robustness to withstand physical stress during typical use.
- Marking and Instructions: Requires clear labeling and user instructions, including warnings that the device should not be operated with external timers or remote-control systems.
- Abnormal Conditions: Consideration of safety under practical abnormal situations and the influence of electromagnetic interference.
- Compliance and Implementation: Sets deadlines for national adoption and withdrawal of conflicting standards (dop 2007-03-01, dow 2009-06-01).
Applications
EN 60335-2-74:2003/A1:2006 specifically applies to portable immersion heaters designed for household and similar environments. These appliances are commonly used for:
- Heating water in domestic settings such as kitchens and bathrooms.
- Small-scale heating tasks that require portability and quick heat transfer.
- Situations demanding certified safety measures to prevent electric shock and fire hazards in residential appliances.
Manufacturers, testing labs, and regulatory bodies rely on this standard to ensure product safety, maintain market compliance, and protect consumers from hazards related to electrical immersion heaters.
Related Standards
This amendment forms part of the broader EN 60335 series covering safety of household and similar electrical appliances. Related standards include:
- EN 60335-1: General safety requirements for household electrical appliances.
- EN 60335-2-X: Particular requirements for various types of electrical appliances within the household sector.
- IEC 60335-2-74: The corresponding international standard referenced by EN 60335-2-74.
Manufacturers designing or certifying electrical household products should consider these standards in conjunction to ensure overall compliance and safety.
