Overview
EN 60335-2-50:2003/A1:2008 is a European standard issued by CLC that specifies particular safety requirements for commercial electric bains-marie. It is part of the broader EN 60335 series, which addresses the safety of household and similar electrical appliances. This amendment (A1:2008) supplements the original 2003 document, incorporating updates aligned with IEC 60335-2-50:2002/A1:2007. The standard ensures that commercial electric bains-marie manufactured and used within CENELEC member countries meet stringent safety criteria to protect users and commercial environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard targets commercial electric bains-marie, devices used for warming food safely in professional and commercial catering settings. It builds upon general appliance safety rules, adding particular requirements specific to these warm holding devices.Safety Requirements
- Ingress Protection (IP Rating): Appliances intended for use on a table must have a minimum ingress protection rating of IPX3, while other types of appliances must be at least IPX4. This ensures protection against water splashes, crucial in commercial kitchen environments.
- Thermal Cut-Outs:
- For three-phase appliances, thermal cut-outs protecting heating elements or motors with hazardous unexpected starts must be non-self-resetting, trip-free types, providing all-pole disconnection.
- For single-phase appliances and heating elements, at least one-pole disconnection is required with non-self-resetting trip-free thermal cut-outs, enhancing operator safety by preventing accidental restarting or overheating.
- Rupture Resistance: Cut-outs employing bulb and capillary technology must maintain compliance even if the capillary tube ruptures, ensuring reliable protection.
Construction and Stability
Commercial electric bains-marie must remain stable when fully loaded on an inclined plane, moving no more than 100 mm under a 10° tilt. This minimizes the risk of tipping accidents in busy commercial environments.Implementation Deadlines
- National adoption deadline: November 1, 2008
- Withdrawal of conflicting standards: February 1, 2011
Applications
EN 60335-2-50:2003/A1:2008 is essential for manufacturers, safety engineers, and compliance professionals involved in the development, testing, and certification of commercial electric bains-marie. The standard ensures:
- Safe operation of electric warming cabinets in commercial kitchens, cafeterias, and catering services.
- Enhanced protection against electrical hazards such as overheating or electrical shock.
- Water ingress resistance suitable for humid and splash-prone kitchen environments.
- Reliable emergency cut-off mechanisms to prevent thermal hazards and motor-related accidents.
By adhering to this standard, businesses and manufacturers can demonstrate compliance with European safety regulations and improve user confidence and operational safety.
