General Information
Overview
EN 60917-2-1:1995 (CLC) - based on IEC 917-2-1 - is a sectional detail specification for the 25 mm equipment practice that defines interface co‑ordination dimensions for cabinets and racks. Its purpose is to specify the height, width and depth coordination dimensions and aperture/mounting rules that ensure mechanical interchangeability of cabinets, racks and subrack mounting across different manufacturers and installations.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and intent
- Dimension tables and rules are a selection from the IEC sectional specification and must maintain the dimensional relationships (coordination dimensions H, W, Dc and aperture/mounting dimensions Hc, Wc, Dc1).
- 25 mm equipment practice
- Modular pitch of 25 mm is the basic unit for panel and mounting pitches; mounting flange positions and aperture increments are specified on 25 mm steps.
- Example formula present in the document: HC2 = 10 × 25 mm + 2 mm (minimum aperture).
- Cabinet types
- Type A: outside dimensions include all protrusions (feet, lifting aids); mounting flanges optional; aperture dimensions must be contained within coordination dimensions.
- Type B: protrusions (doors, hinges, handles) may extend beyond aperture limits within defined dimensional limits.
- Racks
- Defined as open structures; outside dimensions match Type A cabinet coordination dimensions.
- Versions and robustness
- Two cabinet/rack versions are tabulated to permit light‑duty (version 1) and ruggedized (version 2) applications.
- Tables and tolerances
- Standard tables provide selectable height, width and depth values (with tolerances). Where dimensions are not listed, manufacturers can use values from the sectional specification provided inter‑dimension relationships are preserved.
- Internal interface
- Internal dimensions (D, W1, Wc1, Wc2, Wc3, Hc1) must be used to maintain subrack interchangeability and mounting hole positions.
Applications / Who uses this standard
- Equipment and enclosure designers specifying cabinet/rack footprints for electronic systems
- Cabinet and rack manufacturers producing compatible mechanical structures
- System integrators, data center planners and OEMs who require consistent mounting and interchangeability of subracks and plug‑in units
- Procurement, conformity assessors and maintenance teams ensuring mechanical compatibility across suppliers

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
3) They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
International Standard IEC 917-2-1 has been prepared by sub-committee 48D: Mechanical
structures for electronic equipment, of IEC technical committee 48: Electromechanical
components and mechanical structures for electronic equipment.

1 Scope
This section of IEC 917-2 is a detail specification which is to be used in whole or in part in
all fields of electronics where devices and systems are designed according to the
sectional specification IEC 917-2.
The dimensions in the tables of this detail specification are a selection from the sectional
