Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear - Part 8: Control units for built-in thermal protection (PTC) for rotating electrical machines

Specifies rules for control units, which perform the switching functions in response to the thermal detectors incorporated in rotating electrical machines according to EN 60034-11, and the industrial application. It specifies rules for that type of system comprising a positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor detector having particular characteristics, and its associated control unit. The PT100 detectors are covered by EN 60751, where the resistor values are given according to the temperatures of the detector. The present rules lay down the characteristics of association of this particular positive temperature coefficient thermistor detector and its associated control unit (designated Mark A detector and Mark A control unit), when they are used in thermal protection systems. NOTE It is not possible to specify all the requirements for the operating characteristics of a control unit, as they are dependent on some aspects of the thermal detectors. Some aspects of the requirements of the thermal protector system can only be specified when account is taken of the characteristics of the rotating machine to be protected and the method of installation of the detector within the machine. For these reasons, for each characteristic it is necessary to specify who is responsible for stating the required values and who is responsible for compliance with the requirement and for carrying out any confirmatory test.

Določa pravila za to vrsto sistema s termistorskim detektorjem s pozitivnim temperaturnim koeficientom (PTC) s posebnimi značilnostmi in z njim povezano krmilno enoto.

Overview - EN 60947-8:2003 (PTC control units)

EN 60947-8:2003 (CLC adoption of IEC 60947-8:2003) is a European standard within the low-voltage switchgear and controlgear series. It specifies rules for control units that respond to built-in thermal detectors (PTC thermistors) used for thermal protection of rotating electrical machines. The standard defines the characteristics and the required association between a particular PTC detector (designated Mark A) and its associated Mark A control unit, laying out how the detector and control unit together perform switching functions to protect motors from overheating.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope of protection: Rules for thermal protection systems that use positive temperature coefficient (PTC) thermistor detectors incorporated in rotating machines per EN 60034-11.
  • Detector - control unit association: Characteristics and behaviour of the Mark A detector and Mark A control unit when used as a matched system.
  • Complementary detectors: Reference to other sensor types (e.g., PT100 covered by EN 60751) and to thermistor specifications (IEC/EN 60738-1).
  • Standards integration: This Part 8 is to be used in conjunction with EN 60947-1 (general rules) and references EMC and functional test standards (IEC/EN 61000 series, CISPR).
  • Responsibility allocation: The standard notes that many operating characteristics depend on detector type, machine characteristics and installation method - therefore it specifies who must state required values and who must verify compliance or perform confirmatory tests.
  • Normative/informative annexes: Annexes A, B and ZA are normative; Annex C is informative.

Practical applications and users

EN 60947-8:2003 is directly applicable to:

  • Motor manufacturers and OEMs specifying built-in thermal protection.
  • Control-panel and switchgear designers integrating PTC-based motor protection.
  • Electrical installation engineers and maintenance teams responsible for motor safety and compliance.
  • Test laboratories and conformity assessors verifying detector-control unit performance and EMC immunity.
  • Specifiers developing motor protection schemes for industrial applications (pumps, compressors, conveyors, HVAC motors).

Using EN 60947-8 helps ensure consistent, interoperable implementations of PTC thermal protection and clear assignment of responsibilities for specification and testing.
