Overview
EN 60947-5-4:2003/A1:2019 is a key European standard developed by the CLC under the scope of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear. This standard specifically addresses control circuit devices and switching elements, focusing on the method of assessing the performance of low-energy contacts through special tests. It serves as an amendment (A1) to the original EN 60947-5-4:2003 and aligns with the international IEC 60947-5-4:2002/A1:2019 standard.
The document provides critical guidelines and test methods for evaluating the operational reliability and effectiveness of low-energy contacts, commonly used in control equipment for low-voltage applications. It complements the IEC 60947-5-1 standard by specifically targeting low-energy contact performance and is designed to ensure the safety, durability, and functionality of control devices operating at relatively low voltages.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
The standard applies to low-energy contacts used in control circuit devices and switching elements for low-voltage switchgear. It excludes contacts used in functional safety areas and very low energy measurement applications such as sensor or thermocouple systems. The document recommends manufacturer consultation for applications below 100 V AC or DC due to the unique challenges posed by very low operational voltages.Performance Assessment Methods
EN 60947-5-4:2019 outlines special test procedures to rigorously assess contact performance, including mechanical and electrical endurance, reliability, and operational stability under normal conditions defined by IEC 60068-1:2013 environmental testing.Test Conditions and Characteristics
The standard mandates careful selection of operating cycles based on IEC 60947-1 and IEC 60947-5-1 provisions to mirror real-world use cases. It specifies parameters for mechanical and electrical characteristics, including switching endurance, reliability metrics, and environmental conditions to guarantee consistent device performance.Manufacturer Responsibilities
Annex A defines information manufacturers must supply, such as the form of contacts tested and environmental conditions during testing. This ensures transparency and consistent application of the standard across different products and manufacturers.Harmonisation with EU Directives
EN 60947-5-4:2019 supports compliance with the EU Low Voltage Directive 2014/35/EU, providing presumption of conformity with essential safety requirements relating to electrical equipment operating within specified voltage limits. Annex ZZ details the relationship and correspondence between the standard clauses and directive safety objectives.
Applications
This standard is essential for manufacturers, engineers, and quality assurance professionals involved in designing or certifying low-voltage control circuit devices, especially those incorporating low-energy contacts such as:
- Electromechanical relays
- Control switches used in industrial automation
- Motor starters and control panels
- Programmable controllers with digital inputs
- Safety and switching elements in machinery and process control environments
By implementing EN 60947-5-4:2019, stakeholders can ensure their low-energy contact devices meet rigorous performance and safety criteria, reducing failure rates and improving operational reliability in various industrial and commercial electrical systems.
Related Standards
EN 60947-5-4:2019 should be used in conjunction with several related international and European standards that provide complementary requirements and guidelines:
- IEC 60947-1:2007 - Low-voltage switchgear and controlgear: General rules
- IEC 60947-5-1:2016 - Control circuit devices and switching elements: Electromechanical control devices
- IEC 60068-1:2013 - Environmental testing: General and guidance
- IEC 60605-6:2007 - Equipment reliability testing: Validity and estimation of constant failure rate
- EU Directive 2014/35/EU - Low Voltage Directive requiring compliance with safety objectives for electrical equipment
Together, these standards form a comprehensive framework ensuring the safe design, testing, and deployment of low-voltage control devices and their low-energy contacts.
By adhering to EN 60947-5-4:2003/A1:2019, manufacturers and users of low-voltage switchgear and controlgear benefit from enhanced performance assessment methods and compliance pathways, supporting safer and more reliable electrical control systems. This makes the standard highly valuable for global industries prioritizing safety, quality assurance, and standardization in electrical switching and control equipment.
