Overview
EN 60335-2-61:2003/A2:2008 is a European standard published by CLC, focusing on the safety of household and similar electrical appliances, specifically thermal-storage room heaters. This standard outlines the particular requirements necessary to ensure these appliances operate safely within residential environments. It serves as an amendment (A2) to the original EN 60335-2-61:2003, incorporating updates approved by CENELEC in 2008 to address evolving safety considerations and technical advancements.
The standard falls under the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) numbering system as IEC 60335-2-61:2002/A2:2008 and is harmonized across many European countries. It applies to thermal-storage room heaters which employ heat accumulation technology for efficient room heating.
Key Topics
Scope and Application
Covers household and similar electrical appliances designed for thermal storage room heating, addressing essential safety constraints applicable to manufacturers and testing bodies.User Safety Considerations
Includes provisions to protect vulnerable users, such as children or persons with limited physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, emphasizing safe operation even where supervision or instruction is limited.Thermal Control and Components
Specifies requirements for temperature regulation components, focusing on ensuring heaters limit the temperature of their heat-accumulating cores to prevent fire hazards and personal injury.Testing Procedures
Defines test methods, including scenarios where thermal controls are short-circuited to verify the heaters’ fail-safe behavior, ensuring stability even under fault conditions.Compliance and Implementation Dates
Sets mandatory dates for national standard adoption and withdrawal of conflicting standards, facilitating harmonization across Europe starting May 2009, with full withdrawal of previous compliant standards by August 2013.Related Safety Norms Reference
References complementary standards such as ISO 13732-1, which covers ergonomics related to thermal environments and human interaction with hot surfaces.
Applications
EN 60335-2-61:2003/A2:2008 is relevant for:
Manufacturers of thermal-storage room heaters
To design, produce, and validate products that comply with European safety requirements.Testing Laboratories and Certification Bodies
For conducting product safety assessments aligned with updated thermal safety parameters and control integrity.Regulatory Authorities and Market Surveillance
To enforce compliance within member countries ensuring consumer protection and harmonized product safety standards.Distributors and Retailers
To verify the conformity of thermal-storage heaters before market introduction.
This standard helps safeguard consumers by ensuring that thermal-storage heaters maintain safe surface temperatures, electrical insulation, and component reliability, reducing risks such as burns, fires, or electrical shocks.
