Aeronautical ground lighting electrical installation - Constant current regulator: Equipment specifications and tests

This standard covers constant current regulators used in series circuits of aviation ground lighting installations. This prestandard is applicable to constant current regulator assemblies, including control and monitoring devices, used for supply of a constant current to series connected light sources in airfield lighting systems. The Constant Current Regulator is designed to produce a constant current output independent of variations in the circuit load or, in some limits , of variations in the input voltage to the Constant Current Regulator. The object is to provide equipment specifications and tests for constant current regulators used on airport that are considered necessary to meet the operational standards adopted by ICAO and to cover all aspects of safety (electrical, thermal and mechanical). This prestandard is in accordance with ICAO Annexe XIV. In any case, any new operational need for Air Navigation Safety purposes could change some data or principles issued in this prestandard.

IEC 61821:2011 applies to the maintenance of AGL constant current series circuits. This standard should be applied where appropriate for these CCRs. This second edition cancels and replaces the first edition published in 2002. It is a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) revision and update of terms and definitions; b) addition of new paragraphs, such as 'Nominal output current range and tolerances'; c) modification of some paragraphs, such as those related to 'Local control' and 'Remote control'; d) deletion of some paragraphs, in particular 'Power transformers' and 'Output current indicator'.

This standard specifies the characteristics of aeronautical ground lighting series trans-formers (AGLST) used in aeronautical ground lighting for 6,6 A series circuits, at a service voltage of up to 5 kV, supplied by constant current regulators up to 30 kVA in rating. AGL series transformers provide power to airport lighting luminaires or other loads (resistive) from their secondary circuits. The AGL series transformers provide continuity of the series circuit in the event of a loss of the load on the transformer, and electrical isolation between the primary circuit supplied by a constant current regulator, and the secondary circuit connected to the load under conditions defined in this standard.
