Specifications for particular types of winding wires - Part 43: Aromatic polyimide tape wrapped round copper wire, class 240

IEC 60317-43:1997 specifies requirements of tape wrapped round copper winding wire of class 240. The insulation consists of one or two wrappings of aromatic polyimide tape. Class 240 is a thermal class that requires a temperature index of at least 240, and a heat shock temperature of at least 260 °C. NOTE In some countries, e.g. Canada, Russia, USA, this product is assigned a class 220. The tape is coated on one or both sides with a suitable adhesive, for instance, fluorinated ethylene propylene. After wrapping, the tape is heat-sealed to form a continuous and adherent sheath. Specific requirements may be subject to contract. The temperature in degrees Celsius corresponding to the temperature index is not necessarily that at which the wire is recommended to be used and this will depend on many factors, including the types of equipment involved. The range of nominal conductor diameters covered by this standard is 1,600 mm up to and including 5,000 mm. The nominal conductor diameters are given in table 1. When reference is made to winding wire according to this standard, the following information should be given: – reference to IEC 60317-43; – diameter of the conductor; – grade. Example: 60317-43 IEC 2,000 mm grade A2

Exemple: IEC 60317-43 2,000 mm grade A2

Overview

EN 60317-43:1997 (aligned with IEC 60317-43:1997) defines specifications for aromatic polyimide tape wrapped round copper wire, class 240. It covers construction, dimensions, mechanical and thermal performance and key electrical tests for winding wire whose insulation consists of one or two wrappings of aromatic polyimide tape. The tape is adhesive-coated (one or both sides) and heat-sealed after wrapping to form a continuous, adherent sheath. The standard is published by CLC and is intended for use where a high thermal index insulation system is required.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Thermal class: Class 240 - minimum temperature index 240 and heat shock temperature ≥ 260 °C. (Note: in some countries this product may be assigned class 220.)
  • Insulation type: One- or two-layer aromatic polyimide tape; adhesive examples include fluorinated ethylene propylene (FEP). Tape must be wrapped tightly, free of creases, then heat-sealed.
  • Conductor sizes: Nominal conductor diameters covered are given in the standard (see table 1) - standard lists nominal sizes and tolerances (example product format: “60317-43 IEC 2,000 mm grade A2”).
  • Grades and thickness: Multiple grades (A/B series) define single- or double-tape insulation thickness with specified minimum and maximum increases in diameter.
  • Mechanical and electrical tests: Includes elongation, springiness, flexibility and adherence (mandrel tests), heat shock, cut-through, and breakdown voltage requirements. Several tests are listed as “inappropriate” for this product (e.g., resistance to certain solvents, transformer oil).
  • Packaging: Packaging can affect properties (e.g., springback); spool type and packing may be agreed between purchaser and supplier.
  • Notes on use: The temperature index does not automatically define recommended operating temperature - actual service limits depend on equipment and application.

Applications

  • High-temperature winding applications in electrical machines and transformers
  • Power electronics, aerospace and defence components requiring class 240 insulation
  • Specialty coils and motors where compact, heat-resistant insulated copper wire is needed

Who uses this standard

  • Winding wire manufacturers and quality engineers
  • Motor, transformer and coil designers and procurement specialists
  • Test laboratories, certification bodies and compliance teams
  • OEMs specifying high-temperature insulation for electrical windings
