Overview

EN IEC 60335-2-102:2024/A11:2024 is a CENELEC amendment to the European safety standard for household and similar electrical appliances - specifically the particular requirements for gas, oil and solid‑fuel burning appliances having electrical connections. It clarifies the electrical‑safety scope for appliances rated up to 250 V single‑phase and 480 V for other appliances, and supplements EN IEC 60335‑2‑102:2024 and EN 60335‑1. The amendment updates definitions, test limits and constructional requirements to reflect fuel‑burning appliance control standards and practical assembly conditions.

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope and application: Focused on the electrical safety of fuel‑burning appliances; full coverage of other safety aspects (including noise) applies only when the appliance also complies with the relevant product (fuel) standard.
  • Voltage limits: Applies to appliances ≤ 250 V single‑phase and ≤ 480 V other appliances.
  • Leakage current limits: For gas, oil and solid‑fuel burning appliances the leakage current limit is set at 5 mA (Clauses 13.2, 16.2). Components/sub‑assemblies assembled on site may be exempted from whole‑appliance leakage testing if tested separately and interconnected per manufacturer instructions; summed leakage must not exceed limits.
  • Lock‑out definitions: Introduces and distinguishes non‑volatile lock‑out (requires manual reset) and volatile lock‑out (can restart after power interruption).
  • Protective electronic circuits and software: Requires software used in protective electronics to include measures controlling specified fault/error conditions (referenced Table R.2). Repeat testing of protective circuits compliant with listed control standards (Annex ZBB) may be waived.
  • Component standards and inspections: Adds normative references for control and isolation components (e.g., EN 298:2022, EN IEC 60747‑5‑5:2020 for optocouplers, EN 61810‑1:2015 for relays).
  • Testing and construction: Modifications across clauses for heating temperature measurement, moisture resistance, abnormal operation (including relay contact failures), earthing, figures and annexes (e.g., Annex ZE for commercial machines).

Practical applications

This amendment is directly applicable to:

  • Manufacturers and designers of gas, oil and solid‑fuel heaters, boilers, and fuel‑burning appliances with electrical controls.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies performing safety testing and conformity assessment for household appliance safety.
  • Compliance and regulatory engineers ensuring product documentation, firmware safety measures, and component selection meet European electrical safety rules.
  • OEMs and installers assembling appliances on site who must follow manufacturer interconnection instructions to avoid repeated whole‑appliance testing.
