Overview
EN 50525-2-51:2011 is a CENELEC part standard for oil resistant control cables with thermoplastic PVC insulation intended for low‑voltage energy applications. While the EN 50525 series covers cables up to 450/750 V, this Part specifically applies to flexible PVC insulated and sheathed control cables of rated voltages U0/U 300/500 V used mainly for the interconnection of manufacturing machines. It covers both unscreened (H05VV5-F) and screened (H05VVC4V5‑K) types and defines construction, materials and testing requirements for safe, oil‑resistant flexible control cabling.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Cable types: H05VV5‑F (unscreened) and H05VVC4V5‑K (screened braid).
- Conductors: Class 5 (flexible) per EN 60228; conductor sizes 0.5 mm² to 2.5 mm².
- Number of cores: 2 up to 60 cores; preferred counts (2,3,4,5,6,7,12,18,27,36,48,60) and rules for non‑preferred counts (Annex C).
- Insulation & sheath materials: Insulation Type TI2 (EN 50363‑3); inner sheath Type TM2 and outer sheath Type TM5 (EN 50363‑4‑1).
- Temperature rating: Maximum conductor operating temperature 70 °C.
- Screen requirements: Copper braid (plain or tinned) for screened cables; transfer impedance ≤ 250 mΩ/m at 30 MHz.
- Testing: Normative tests in Annex A include conductor resistance, voltage tests, insulation resistance at 70 °C, long‑term DC resistance, flexing (including post‑immersion voltage test), low‑temperature impact (‑5 °C), and fire test EN 60332‑1‑2. Compatibility testing and material tests (EN 50363, EN 50395/50396, EN 60811) are specified.
- Marking & dimensions: CENELEC codes (H05VV5‑F / H05VVC4V5‑K) and dimensional/data tables provided (Annex B).
Applications and who uses this standard
- Applications: Flexible control wiring for industrial machinery, production line interconnections, machine tool cabling and other environments where oil resistance and flexibility are required.
