Overview

EN IEC 63203-204-1:2023 (also published as IEC 63203-204-1:2023 RLV) defines a household washing durability test method for e-textile products. It is part of the IEC 63203 series for wearable electronic devices and technologies and has been endorsed by CENELEC/CLC. The standard focuses on test procedures for electronic textiles that integrate electrically conductive components and sensors to collect user data. It does not cover electrical safety or heat-generation testing.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Applies to textile products with integrated electronics (e.g., sensors, conductive components) performing functions such as body monitoring. Excludes products with components not listed in the standard.
  • Pre-test checklist: Verify product operation per the user manual. Optional measurement of conductive tracks (resistance) may be performed - resistance measurement can follow EN 16812 where applicable. Mark measurement points to ensure repeatability.
  • Washing procedure: Test method references ISO 6330 (domestic washing and drying procedures) and ISO 139 for conditioning. Where not otherwise specified, default conditions are:
    • Washing machine: ISO 6330 Type A reference machine
    • Washing procedure: 4H (as per ISO 6330:2012)
    • Drying: Procedure A - line dry
  • Hand-wash consideration: Because e-textiles include modules and conductive tracks, a hand-wash procedure is considered appropriate where it causes less damage.
  • Operation checks: Functionality of the e-textile must be verified before and after repeated wash/dry cycles to determine durability.
  • Test report requirements: Clause 6 provides the information to be recorded; the second edition expanded the list of required report items.

Notable editorial/technical changes in the 2023 edition:

  • Addition of a washing procedure subclause
  • Optional conductive-track measurement added to the checklist
  • Updates to Figure 1 and additions to Clause 6
  • Deletion of previous subclauses on conductive textiles and leisure/sportswear

Applications and who uses this standard

  • E-textile and wearable product manufacturers - to validate design and care instructions for washable products
  • Textile and electronics testing laboratories - for standardized washing durability testing and reporting
  • R&D teams - to compare materials, conductive tracks and sensor robustness under domestic laundering
  • Quality assurance and compliance teams - to support product claims about washability and lifetime performance
  • Specifiers and procurement - to set washing-durability requirements in supplier contracts

Related standards

  • ISO 6330 - Domestic washing and drying procedures for textile testing (referenced for washing cycles)
  • ISO 139 - Standard atmospheres for conditioning and testing
  • EN 16812 - Resistance measurement methods for conductive textiles (referenced as optional guidance)

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications,
Technical Reports, Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC
Publication(s)”). Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested
in the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-
governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely
with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by
agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence
between any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in
the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nat
