Household and similar electrical appliances - Safety - Part 2-97: Particular requirements for drives for rolling shutters, awnings, blinds and similar equipment

Deals with the safety of electric drives for rolling equipment such as shutters, blinds, and awnings, intended for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V for single-phase and 480 V for other appliances. Examples of rolling equipment that can be driven are awnings; blinds; grilles; projection screens; shutters for doors and windows. Drives for equipment with a spring-controlled driven part, such as a folding arm awning, are also within the scope of this standard.

Overview

EN 60335-2-97:2006 (CLC) is the European safety standard for electric drives for rolling shutters, awnings, blinds and similar equipment used in household and similar environments. It is Part 2-97 of the EN 60335 series and complements EN 60335-1 (General requirements). The standard adopts IEC 60335-2-97 (2002) with amendment A1:2004 and CENELEC modifications. Scope covers motor drives (including tubular motors and drives for spring-controlled parts) for rolling equipment with rated voltages up to 250 V single-phase and 480 V for other appliances. Examples include awnings, blinds, grilles, projection screens and shutters for doors and windows.

Key topics and requirements

  • Relationship to Part 1: This part supplements or modifies EN 60335-1; where not mentioned, Part 1 applies.
  • Marking & instructions: Installation instructions must state risks and measures (e.g., moving parts should be installed higher than 2.5 m where access is possible). Packaging must include key safety instructions. Controls must be clearly identified.
  • Control behaviour & stopping:
    • Drives must be able to start under low supply voltage (tested at 0.9 × rated voltage).
    • Single-button controls must stop movement on actuation; a subsequent actuation must reverse direction.
    • Automatically activated drives must be stoppable by a manual mode selection or stop control, with caveats where stopping could increase hazard.
  • Construction & mechanical safety: Requirements address protection against access to live parts, stability, mechanical hazards, and construction of controls and enclosures.
  • Testing & durability: Includes endurance, moisture resistance and environmental tests (e.g., salt mist per IEC 60068‑2‑52 listed in normative references).
  • Safety integration: Standard aligns with the objectives of the EU Low Voltage Directive and covers relevant Machinery Directive safety objectives where mechanical risks arise.

Applications and users

Who uses EN 60335-2-97:

  • Manufacturers of motor drives, tubular motors and controllers for rolling shutters, blinds and awnings
  • System integrators and OEMs designing motorized window and exterior shading systems
  • Test labs, certification bodies and conformity assessors
  • Product safety engineers, compliance officers and installers specifying compliant drives Practical uses: product design validation, CE marking support, test specification for endurance and electrical safety, and installation guidance to reduce mechanical hazards.

Related standards

  • EN 60335-1 - Household and similar electrical appliances: General requirements
  • EN 13659 - Shutters: performance & safety
  • EN 13120 - Internal blinds: performance & safety
  • EN 13561 - External blinds & awnings: performance & safety
  • IEC 60068-2-52 - Environmental testing (salt mist) - referenced for durability tests

EN 60335-2-97 is essential for ensuring safe, compliant motorized rolling equipment and for integrating electrical and mechanical safety in residential and similar installations.

2009-04-01 This part 2 has to be used in conjunction with EN 60335-1, Household and similar electrical appliances – Safety – Part 1: General requirements. It was established on the basis of the 2002 edition of that standard. Amendments and revisions of Part 1 have also to be taken into account and the dates when such changes become applicable will be stated in the relevant amendment or revision of Part 1. This part 2 supplements or modifies the corresponding clauses of EN 60335-1, so as to convert it into the European Standard: Safety requirements for electric drives for rolling shutters, awnings, blinds and similar equipment. In this document, p is used in the margin to indicate instructions for preparing the printed version.

– 3 – EN 60335-2-97:2006 Introduction p Add: An investigation by CENELEC TC 61 has shown that all risks from products within the scope of this standard are fully covered by the Low Voltage Directive, 73/23/EEC. If the product has mechanical moving parts, a risk assessment in accordance with the Machinery Directive, 98/37/EC, has shown that the risks are mainly of electrical origin and consequently this directive is not applicable. However, the relevant essential safety requirements of the Machinery Directive are covered by this standard together with the principal objectives of the Low Voltage Directive.
The intended use of the drives covered by this standard is for them to be installed together with rolling shutters, awnings or blinds and the necessary ancillary components (e.g. controls, safety devices) to create a power operated shutter, awning or blind, the safety of which is ensured by this standard and the product standards EN 13659 for shutters, EN 13120 for internal blinds, and EN 13561 for external blinds (including awnings). _____________ Endorsement notice The text of the International Standard IEC 60335-2-97:2002 and its amendment A1:2004 was approved by CENELEC as a European Standard with agreed common modifications as given below. Delete “incorporating a tubular motor”.
Marking and instructions p 7.12.1
Add after the second paragraph: The installation instructions for drives allowing access to unprotected moving parts after installation shall state the substance of the following:
Moving parts of the drive must be installed higher than 2,5 m above the floor or other level that could provide access to it.
This information shall also be stated on the packaging. p Add to the third paragraph:
– fixed controls have to be installed visibly; p Replace the last dashed item by:
– how to connect the drive to the driven part and how to adjust the controls. p Delete the last paragraph.

Starting of motor-operated appliances p Replace the text by: Drives shall start under low supply voltage conditions. Compliance is checked by the following test. The drive is supplied at rated voltage and operated under normal operation for at least one cycle, finishing with the driven part in the fully unrolled position. It is then allowed to cool down to approximately ambient temperature.
NOTE
For drives supplied without driven part, the driven part is replaced by the load of the test apparatus in Figure 102. The drive is then supplied at 0,9 times rated voltage and started 10 times from different positions in the rolling direction. The drive is allowed to cool down to approximately ambient temperature between successive starts. The drive shall start each time and protective devices shall not operate. 20
Stability and mechanical hazards p 20.104
Delete. p Add:
20.Z101
During the movement of drives controlled by a single button control, actuation of the control shall stop the movement. Further actuation shall restart the movement in the opposite direction.
20.Z102
It shall be possible to stop the movement of automatically activated drives by manual actuation of a mode selection device or a stop control.
NOTE 1
An emergency stop is not required if it does not introduce a reduction of the hazards compared to the device acting as the normal stop control.
NOTE 2
Manual actuation may be ignored by the automatic safeguard actuation if stopping the product can increase the hazards. 22
