Overview
EN 3372-001:2007 is a CEN technical specification for aerospace electrical circular connectors - medium and high contact density, scoop-proof with bayonet coupling. It defines general characteristics, qualification, acceptance and quality assurance, and the test programmes and groups for connectors rated for continuous operating temperatures of −65 °C to 175 °C or 200 °C (depending on class/model). These connectors are similar in intent to MIL‑DTL‑38999 series I but are not intermateable.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Connector types: circular, scoop-proof, bayonet-coupled plugs and receptacles with medium to high contact density.
- Operating temperatures: continuous service at −65 °C to 175 °C or 200 °C depending on class.
- Contacts: crimp or solder types; sizes 22, 20, 16, 12 and 8 are supported. Contacts are gold‑plated on an appropriate undercoat; silver undercoats are prohibited. Class Y uses ferrous alloy contacts; other classes use copper alloys.
- Materials & coatings: housings in aluminium alloy (plated per class) or passivated stainless steel. Requirements to prevent galvanic corrosion with an electromotive force ≤ 0.25 V (see EN 3197).
- Mechanical design: permanently fitted coupling ring (knurled) that locks at ≈120° rotation; visual mating indicator via bayonet pin ends; receptacle teeth for rear accessories; O‑ring sealing options; polarisation using main and secondary keyways/keys. Grounding spring must engage a minimum of 1.02 mm in the receptacle before contacts engage.
- Inserts & sealing: hard, non‑removable inserts with integrated contact retention, bonded interfacial seals for male inserts, grommets for cable sealing and rear accessory interfaces.
- Testing & quality assurance: defined qualification, acceptance and routine production tests; test programmes and groups; gauges for grounding spring holding force and contact stability; requirements for maintenance of qualification and production quality control.
Applications and users
- Who uses this standard: aerospace connector manufacturers, system integrators, avionics designers, procurement teams, maintenance and overhaul organizations, and test laboratories.
- Where applied: military and civil aircraft wiring, avionics racks, sensors and actuators where high contact density, elevated temperature endurance and reliable coupling are required. Useful in environments requiring scoop‑proof protection and positive bayonet retention.
Related standards
- EN 3372-002 (performance & contact arrangements)
- EN 3372-006, EN 3372-009 (product standards for protective covers and mounting)
- EN 2591-100 (test methods), EN 3197 (installation / galvanic guidance)
- Reference comparators: MIL‑DTL‑38999 series (not intermateable)
This specification is essential for ensuring consistent performance, interchangeability within the EN 3372 family, and traceable qualification and production testing of bayonet‑coupled aerospace circular connectors.
