Overview
EN 3745-410:2015 is a European Standard developed by CEN that defines test methods for assessing the thermal endurance of finished optical cables specifically designed for aerospace and aircraft use. This standard is part of the aerospace series related to optical fibres and cables, and it provides critical guidelines and procedures to estimate the thermal life of such cables under controlled laboratory conditions.
The document outlines two primary test methods to evaluate the thermal life of optical cables:
- Method A: thermal life testing without mechanical stress, focusing solely on temperature effects.
- Method B: thermal life testing under combined thermal and mechanical stresses.
This standard is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and aerospace quality assurance teams to ensure the reliability and longevity of optical cables used in demanding aeronautical environments.
Key Topics
Scope and Purpose
- Measures thermal endurance of finished optical cables used in aircraft.
- Includes two test variants simulating operation conditions with or without mechanical stress.
Test Specimens
- Preparation of fibre ends as per EN 2591-100.
- Conditioning at standard test conditions before testing.
Method A: Thermal Life without Mechanical Stress
- Specimens fixed on aircraft-representative apparatus.
- Exposure to multiple temperature levels with attenuation monitoring.
- Failure defined by exceeding allowable attenuation variation.
- Life calculation using log average life methods according to ASTM-D3032.
- Test temperatures selection guidelines to avoid overexposure or inaccurate extrapolation.
Method B: Thermal Life with Mechanical Stress
- Test specimens fixed using padded plates to reduce fibre stress variations.
- Cable bent at minimum bend radius with cyclic mechanical stress applied.
- Attenuation measured after each thermal/mechanical cycle.
- Failure criteria include excessive attenuation or physical jacket degradation (cracking/splitting).
- Regression line calculation for life expectancy estimation using least squares methods on log-life versus inverse absolute temperature plots.
- Detailed apparatus requirements including Light Launch System (LLS), Light Detection System (LDS), climatic chamber, and specialized test fixtures.
Calculation and Extrapolation
- Use of logarithmic regression to model insulation life as a function of temperature.
- Careful extrapolation to predict lifespan at lower temperatures.
- Defined limits for temperature extrapolation to maintain test accuracy.
Applications
EN 3745-410:2015 is applicable in various aerospace contexts where optical fibres and cables are integral components, including:
Aircraft Wiring Systems
- Ensuring optical fibres and cables maintain performance and durability under thermal stresses experienced during flight.
Avionics and Communication Networks
- Validating the longevity of optical cables used in data transmission critical to avionics functionality.
Aerospace Manufacturing and Quality Control
- Providing standardized test protocols for manufacturers to qualify optical cables.
- Enabling aerospace OEMs to specify reliable cable products with verified thermal life data.
Research and Development
- Supporting material and design innovations by offering repeatable, standardized tests for cable thermal endurance.
- Assisting in comparing performance of new fibre optic cable materials under realistic combined thermal and mechanical stresses.
