Overview
EN 2125:2019 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the technical requirements for aluminium alloy Al-P16- T6151 plates with thicknesses ranging from greater than 6 mm up to 120 mm, specifically designed for aerospace applications. This standard ensures consistency, quality, and safety in the production and use of these aluminium plates, which are critical components in aerospace engineering.
The document aligns with the broader aerospace series metallic material standards and supports standardized manufacturing and testing processes throughout Europe. EN 2125:2019 was officially approved in September 2019 and mandates adoption by all EU member national standardization bodies by March 2020.
Key Topics
Material Specification
Defines aluminium alloy Al-P16- in the T6151 temper, which includes solution heat treatment, quenching, controlled stretching, and artificial aging.Material Form and Dimensions
Rolled aluminium plates are covered with a thickness range of 6 mm < a ≤ 120 mm, suitable for structural aerospace use.Chemical Composition
Precise limits for elements including Silicon (Si), Iron (Fe), Copper (Cu), Manganese (Mn), Magnesium (Mg), Chromium (Cr), Titanium (Ti), Zirconium (Zr), and Aluminium (Al) ensure the alloy meets aerospace-grade standards.Mechanical Properties
Includes required values for:- Proof stress (Rp0.2) between 340 MPa to 410 MPa depending on thickness
- Tensile strength (Rm) from 400 MPa to 460 MPa
- Elongation (A%) ensuring ductility These ensure reliability and performance under aerospace operating conditions.
Heat Treatment Process
Prescribes solution treatment at 503 °C ± 5 °C, water quenching at temperatures ≤ 40 °C, 1.5% to 3% controlled stretching, and artificial aging at 180 °C ± 5 °C for 3 to 7 hours to optimize material properties.Testing and Qualification
Refers to EN 4400-1 for product qualification and material testing protocols, emphasizing the necessity of cooperation between manufacturers and purchasers for approval.
Applications
EN 2125:2019 aluminium alloy plates are extensively used in the aerospace industry where high strength-to-weight ratios, corrosion resistance, and fatigue performance are critical. Typical applications include:
- Aircraft structural components such as fuselage and wing skins
- Aerospace platforms demanding reliable and consistent aluminium plating
- Parts where dimensional accuracy and mechanical strength are vital for safety and performance
- Components requiring precise heat treatment and mechanical stretching to meet specific aerospace certification requirements
By adhering to EN 2125:2019, manufacturers ensure their aluminium plates fulfill strict European aerospace regulatory standards, promoting interoperability and safety across aerospace supply chains.
Related Standards
EN 2125:2019 is part of a comprehensive series of aerospace metallic material standards. Key related documents include:
- EN 4258 – General organization of aerospace metallic material standards, guiding the structure and linkage of standards in this series.
- EN 4400-1 – Technical specification for aluminium and aluminium-magnesium alloy plates, detailing qualification procedures referenced in EN 2125.
- EN 4500-2 – Specifies drafting and presentation rules for aluminium, aluminium alloys, and magnesium alloys standards in the aerospace sector.
These standards collectively enable uniform quality systems for aerospace materials throughout Europe, facilitating compliance, safety, and innovation.
