Overview
EN ISO 10582:2018 (ISO 10582:2017) defines specifications for resilient floor coverings made from heterogeneous poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC). It applies to non-cushioned PVC floor coverings supplied as tiles, planks or rolls, and allows products with a transparent, non‑PVC factory finish. The standard helps manufacturers and purchasers by specifying material identification, performance requirements, test methods and marking so consumers can make informed choices.
Key topics and technical requirements
- Scope and definitions: covers heterogeneous floor coverings (wear layer + other layers), factory finish, plank/tile geometry, binder content and related terms.
- Identification - Binder content: products are identified by minimum wear‑layer binder content. Two types:
- Type I: minimum 80% binder content in the wear layer
- Type II: minimum 30% binder content in the wear layer
- Performance and dimensional requirements: includes limits and test methods for:
- overall thickness and wear layer thickness (ISO 24346, ISO 24340)
- mass per unit area (ISO 23997)
- length, width, straightness and squareness (ISO 24341, ISO 24342)
- dimensional stability and curling after heat exposure (ISO 23999)
- flexibility (ISO 24344), residual indentation (ISO 24343-1)
- effect of castor chair (ISO 4918) for higher wear classes
- Classification and consumer guidance: references ISO 10874 classification based on intensity of use to indicate suitability (e.g., residential vs. heavy commercial).
- Marking, labelling and packaging: specifies information manufacturers must provide to ensure traceability and correct use.
- Test references: normative test standards are listed (ISO and ASTM/EN methods) for colour fastness, seam strength, adhesive peel, etc.
Applications and who uses this standard
- Manufacturers - to design, document and declare product properties (binder content, thickness, durability).
- Specifiers & architects - to select appropriate PVC tiles/planks/rolls for intended intensity of use (commercial, healthcare, education, residential).
- Installers & flooring contractors - to verify dimensional tolerances and installation suitability (weldable edges, loose‑lay, glued or floating systems).
- Laboratories & quality control - for testing against the specified ISO/EN methods.
- Procurement & compliance teams - to ensure products meet labeling and performance requirements for contracts and regulations.
