Overview

ISO 24341:2006 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that specifies standardized methods for determining the length, width, and straightness of resilient and textile floor coverings in sheet form. This standard is essential to ensure consistent quality and precise measurements for floor covering products, which directly impact installation quality and final appearance.

Floor coverings that deviate excessively from specified dimensions or straight edges can result in installation challenges and aesthetic issues. ISO 24341:2006 sets a reliable framework for manufacturers, suppliers, and testing laboratories to assess these physical characteristics accurately.

Key Topics

  • Measurement Principles
The standard establishes that the length, width, and straightness of the sheet must be measured with the material laid flat on a smooth surface to ensure accuracy.

  • Measurement Equipment
    Key apparatus includes:

    • Ruler or semi-rigid tape with 0.05% accuracy for width measurement
    • Calibrated measuring device such as a measuring wheel or steel tape accurate to 0.1% for length
    • String line (minimum 10 meters) for assessing straightness by comparing the edge to a virtual straight line
  • Test Conditions
Specimens must be conditioned at ambient room temperature for at least 4 hours before testing to ensure consistency in results.

  • Specimen Selection
Different length requirements apply depending on what is measured:

    • Width measurement: test piece approximately 200 mm in length
    • Length measurement: entire roll if possible
    • Straightness measurement: minimum 5 meters of sheet length required
  • Measurement Procedures

    • Width: measured at three evenly spaced points along the length of the test piece
    • Length: measured in two positions parallel to the test piece axis or by re-rolling with a calibrated wheel
    • Straightness: measured by the maximum deviation of the sheet edge from a taut string line along the roll’s length
  • Result Expression
Width and straightness measurements are rounded to the nearest 5 mm, length measurements to the nearest 0.05 m. The smallest width measurement determines the effective width.

Applications

ISO 24341:2006 is primarily applied in the flooring manufacturing industry, quality control labs, and construction projects involving resilient or textile flooring products. Its practical applications include:

  • Product Quality Verification
Ensures floor coverings meet strict dimensional tolerances and straightness criteria before shipment or installation.

  • Installation Preparation
Verifying sheet straightness reduces installation errors and improves the final floor aesthetics.

  • Supplier and Manufacturer Communication
Provides a common standardized language for dimension and straightness requirements, aiding contract specifications and acceptance.

  • Regulatory Compliance
Used to comply with national or industry-specific standards referencing international dimension and straightness measurement methods.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International
Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.

INTERNATIONAL STANDARD ISO 24341:2006(E)
Resilient and textile floor coverings — Determination of length,
width and straightness of sheet
1Scope
This International Standard specifies methods for determining the length, width and straightness of resilient or
textile floor coverings in sheet form.
The straightness of resilient or textile floor is an important consideration because the installed flooring will have
an objectionable appearance if the machine direction edges of the sheet flooring deviate excessively from a
straight line.
2 Principle
A test piece, resting on a flat surface, is measured at several points along its width and length.
The straightness at the deviation point of a test piece of a resilient or textile sheet resting on a flat surface is
carried out by measuring the deviation from a virtual straight line passing through both ends of an edge.

Avant-propos
