Overview
EN 14622:2005 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the characteristics and requirements for air gaps with circular overflow (restricted) of Family A, Type F, designed to protect potable water installations from pollution caused by backflow. These air gaps safeguard drinking water by preventing contaminants from re-entering the potable water system. The standard applies to both factory-assembled and site-constructed air gaps intended for nominal flow velocities not exceeding 3 m/s. It also defines the necessary physicochemical properties of materials used in construction to ensure safe and reliable operation during normal use.
Key Topics
Air Gap Definition
The air gap is a permanent vertical distance between the lowest point of the water feed orifice and the critical water level, including a circular overflow capable of draining maximum inflow under fault conditions. This ensures no contact occurs between the potable water outlet and potentially contaminated liquid.Design and Construction Requirements
The standard mandates four main components: a water inlet device, a receiving vessel, an overflow arrangement, and an air break to drain. The feed pipe and inlet device must be securely fixed to maintain the air gap, and submerged supply pipes are prohibited.Materials
Materials used must comply with EU and EFTA regulations concerning water installations. They should be resistant to the water supplied and any substances that may come in contact with them, ensuring that they do not adversely affect drinking water quality.Air Gap Dimensions
The critical air gap distance (A) must be at least twice the diameter (D) of the feed pipe, and no less than 20 mm. The overflow pipe's cross-sectional area must be at least four times the area of the feed pipe’s cross section, ensuring sufficient drainage capacity.Backflow Prevention Measures
When the receiving vessel is subject to backflow or positive pressure, additional means such as non-return valves should be incorporated. Potable water inlets must be positioned above non-potable inlets and separated by at least 2D horizontally and vertically downward.Verification Methods
Verification of compliance can be achieved by test or measurement. Testing includes closing all outlets except the overflow, applying calculated flow rates based on feed pipe diameter, and confirming no contact between water and the inlet device during operation.Marking
Factory-made products must display permanent, visible markings including the manufacturer’s logo, family and type designation, nominal diameter (DN or D), and reference to EN 14622:2005.
Applications
Water Supply Systems
EN 14622:2005 air gaps are crucial in potable water supply installations, providing a physical barrier to prevent contamination through backflow.Building Plumbing Systems
Used widely in domestic, commercial, and industrial buildings to ensure that contaminated water cannot return into the potable supply.Water Treatment Plants
Applied at various points where potable water could interface with non-potable sources, safeguarding water quality.Public Infrastructure
Incorporated in municipal water distribution to meet regulatory requirements and ensure consumer protection from cross-contamination.
