Overview

EN 13087-1:2000/A1:2001 is a European Standard developed by CEN (European Committee for Standardization) that specifies the test methods related to the conditions and conditioning of protective helmets. This amendment to the original EN 13087-1:2000 standard focuses on ensuring uniform and reliable testing conditions for head protection equipment, aligning with essential requirements of the EU Directive for personal protective equipment (PPE) 89/686/EEC.

The standard is vital for manufacturers, testing laboratories, and regulatory bodies involved in the production and certification of protective helmets used across various industries, including construction, sports, and manufacturing. It ensures that helmet performance testing reflects realistic environmental conditions and conditioning procedures, which directly affect safety and product reliability.

Key Topics

  • Test Conditions and Conditioning Procedures
Defines the environmental and preparatory conditions under which helmets must be tested to simulate real-world use and aging. This ensures consistent, repeatable results across different testing facilities.

  • Compliance with EU Directive 89/686/EEC
Supports conformity with legal requirements regarding PPE by addressing essential safety, comfort, and efficiency criteria within the standard’s testing framework.

  • Aging and Durability Considerations
Includes methods for subjecting helmets to conditioning processes that simulate aging, helping manufacturers evaluate long-term performance and safety under various environmental influences such as temperature, humidity, and UV exposure.

  • Identification and Health-Related Markings
Specifies the handling and verification of PPE identification marks that relate directly or indirectly to user health and safety, ensuring traceability and regulatory compliance.

  • Multilingual Official Versions
The amendment is available in English, French, and German, ensuring accessibility and consistent application across European markets.

Applications

  • Helmet Manufacturing Quality Control
By following EN 13087-1:2000/A1 test protocols, manufacturers can reliably assess materials and construction quality under standardized conditioning, improving product safety and durability.

  • Certification and Regulatory Testing
Testing bodies and notified certification organizations use this standard to validate helmet compliance with EU safety directives before market approval.

  • Research and Development
R&D teams employ these conditioning methods to innovate helmet designs that maintain protective performance in varying environmental conditions, extending product lifespan.

  • Workplace Safety Management
Ensures safety officers and procurement specialists select helmets tested under rigorous conditions, reducing risk of equipment failure on site.

Related Standards

  • EN 13087-2: Test methods - Impact and penetration resistance
Complements Part 1 by focusing on dynamic performance testing of protective helmets.

  • EN 397: Industrial safety helmets
Provides additional requirements and test methods specific to industrial helmet applications.

  • EU PPE Directive 89/686/EEC
Lays down legal requirements for personal protective equipment to which EN 13087-1 contributes compliance support.

  • CEN/TC 158 - Head Protection Standards
The technical committee responsible for developing comprehensive head protection standards within the EU.

Using EN 13087-1:2000/A1:2001 ensures that protective helmets undergo rigorous, standardized testing procedures reflecting realistic conditioning scenarios. This guarantees improved safety performance, compliance with European legislation, and promotes trust among manufacturers, regulators, and users in various sectors requiring reliable head protection.
