Overview

EN 12642:2016 (CEN) specifies minimum requirements and test methods for the body structure of commercial vehicles and trailers used for the securing of cargo on road vehicles. It applies to standard and reinforced vehicle bodies (e.g., box, drop-side, curtainsider) and sets out how body components (front, rear and side walls, optional floor ledge) must resist forces that can be relied on for load securing. Vans covered by ISO 27956 are excluded. The standard defines test protocols, documentation and marking so tested bodies can be used as part of a load‑securing strategy.

Key Topics

  • Scope & applicability
    • Applies to commercial vehicle bodies and trailers related by design and body type.
    • Excludes vans per ISO 27956.
  • Test methods
    • Static airbag test (Annex A) - applies a uniform pressure for at least 5 minutes to front, rear and side walls.
    • Dynamic driving test (Annex B) - verifies behaviour under real driving accelerations.
    • Alternative: static inclination test per EN 12195-1 or validated calculation methods (backed by tests).
  • Designation and test forces
    • Two requirement levels: Code L (standard) and Code XL (reinforced).
    • Example static test forces (as defined in the standard):
      • Front wall: Code L = 0.4·P·g (max 50 kN); Code XL = 0.5·P·g (no max).
      • Rear wall: Code L = 0.25·P·g (max 31 kN); Code XL = 0.3·P·g.
      • Side wall: Code L = 0.3·P·g (curtainsiders without boards: 0.15·P·g); Code XL = 0.4·P·g.
    • P is the specified test value (kg) documented in the test certificate - not necessarily the vehicle payload.
  • Floor and floor ledge
    • The floor is part of the sub-frame; floor strength must be declared by manufacturer. Axle load testing analogous to EN 283.
    • Optional floor ledge: minimum height 15 mm and deflection limits (elastic deformation ≤ 20 mm under specified test).
  • Acceptance criteria
    • No permanent deformation or damage that impairs intended use.
    • Max deflection during test ≤ 300 mm; permanent deformation up to 20 mm allowed at 100% test force if use is not impaired.
  • Documentation & marking
    • Test certificates and marking requirements described (Clause 6, Annex C/D).

Applications and Users

  • Vehicle manufacturers and bodybuilders validating body structures for load‑securing capability.
  • Fleet operators, transport and logistics companies selecting compliant bodies.
  • Certification bodies, compliance officers, insurers and regulators assessing cargo‑securing risk.
  • Designers performing calculations for modular systems and connections between body and floor.

Related Standards

  • EN 12195-1:2010 (load restraining calculations / static inclination test reference)
  • EN 283 (axle load testing on floors - analogous procedure)
  • IMO/ILO/UNECE CTU Code (packing of cargo transport units)
  • ISO 27956 (vans - exclusion)

The EN 12642:2016 standard provides essential guidelines for the securing of cargo on road vehicles, specifically addressing the body structure of commercial vehicles and trailers. Its scope comprehensively covers the requirements for both standard and reinforced vehicle bodies, including side walls and various structural components. By establishing minimum requirements, the standard ensures that vehicle design adheres to safety protocols that mitigate risks associated with cargo transportation. One of the key strengths of this standard lies in its focus on testing and evaluation procedures for body structures. It specifies appropriate tests that ascertain the integrity and durability of commercial vehicle bodies, which is critical for effective load securing. This emphasis on rigorous testing helps manufacturers ensure that their vehicles can withstand the forces exerted during transit, ultimately contributing to road safety. Furthermore, the inclusion of specific guidance on floor strength and sub-frame considerations enhances the relevance of EN 12642:2016 in the context of commercial vehicle design. By requiring manufacturers to provide necessary information on the floor's capacity, it addresses a crucial element that directly impacts the overall safety and performance of cargo transport. However, it is noteworthy that the standard does not cover vans as defined by ISO 27956, which may limit its applicability within certain sectors of the freight industry. This exclusion underscores the necessity for different standards catering to varied vehicle types and their specific requirements. Overall, EN 12642:2016 stands out as a vital standard that not only advocates for the structural safety of commercial vehicles but also facilitates compliance within the transportation sector, aligning with broader safety regulations and enhancing the operational effectiveness of cargo securing practices.
