Tests for mechanical and physical properties of aggregates - Part 10: Determination of water suction height

This European Standard describes the reference method, used for type testing and in case of dispute, for determining the water suction height of an aggregate in direct contact with a free water surface. For other purposes, in particular production control, other methods may be used, provided that an appropriate working relationship with the reference methods has been established.
NOTE   Capillary water uptake in an aggregate layer under the ground floor may cause moisture problems in the building. If the layer is thicker than the water suction height of the aggregate used, the layer is considered as a capillary barrier.

Preskusi mehanskih in fizikalnih lastnosti agregatov - 10. del: Določevanje kapilarnega dviga vode

Overview

EN 1097-10:2014 - Tests for mechanical and physical properties of aggregates - Part 10 provides the reference method for determining the water suction height of aggregates in direct contact with a free water surface. Published by CEN, this method is intended for type testing and as the authoritative procedure in case of dispute. For routine production control, alternate methods may be used only when an appropriate relationship to this reference method has been established.

Why it matters: capillary water uptake in aggregate layers under ground floors can cause moisture problems. If an aggregate layer is thicker than its water suction height, it functions as a capillary barrier, reducing rising damp risk.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Reference method for water suction height; hygroscopic moisture and compacted dry bulk density are also measured and recorded.
  • Test principle: A dry aggregate test portion in a vertical transparent tube is placed in contact with water. Water rises by capillarity; equilibrium moisture distribution defines the suction height.
  • Measured parameters:
    • Maximal hygroscopic moisture content (in sealed container near 100% RH)
    • Compacted dry bulk density (by layer filling and light compaction)
    • Capillary water uptake over time and derived water suction height
  • Apparatus & environment: transparent tube and vessel (minimum dimensions depend on aggregate size), moisture container with saturated K2SO4 solution, ventilated oven at (110 ± 5) °C, test cabinet maintained ~20–25 °C (±2 °C).
  • Sampling & preparation: Laboratory sample reduced per EN 932-2; specified minimum test portion volumes; oven-dry to constant mass (EN 1097-5).
  • Test progression: initial 5 min mass, then measurements at 24 h, 48 h, 72 h, 168 h and weekly until mass change over 7 days is < 0.2 kg/m² of suction area.
  • Reporting: mandatory data include suction height, hygroscopic moisture, compacted dry bulk density and test conditions.

Applications and users

  • Who uses it: aggregate manufacturers, independent testing laboratories, QA/QC engineers, consultants, structural and civil engineers, flooring and foundation designers, building regulators and contractors.
  • Practical uses:
    • Establishing whether an aggregate layer will act as a capillary barrier beneath ground floors
    • Type testing for product specifications and conformity assessments
    • Resolving contractual disputes about moisture performance
    • Supporting material selection for drainage, sub-base and floor construction
