Overview
EN 2687:2004 is a European standard issued by CEN that specifies the technical requirements for aerospace-grade aluminium alloy AL-P7010- in the T7451 temper condition. This standard applies specifically to rolled aluminium plates with thicknesses greater than 6 mm and up to 160 mm. Tailored for aerospace applications, EN 2687 ensures that aluminium plates meet stringent quality, mechanical, and chemical criteria necessary for safe and reliable use in the aerospace industry.
The standard is part of the broader EN aerospace metallic material series and aligns with EN 4258, which covers the general organization of aerospace material standards. Approved by the European Association of Aerospace Manufacturers (AECMA), EN 2687 harmonizes national standards across multiple European nations, enabling consistent procurement and manufacturing of aluminium aerospace plates.
Key Topics
Material Specification: Defines aluminium alloy AL-P7010- with chemical composition limits ensuring optimal mechanical properties and corrosion resistance. Important elements include copper (Cu), magnesium (Mg), zinc (Zn), and trace elements such as zirconium (Zr) to enhance performance.
Plate Dimensions: Covers thickness range from greater than 6 mm to a maximum of 160 mm, catering to various aerospace structural component requirements.
Temper Condition T7451: Establishes requirements for heat treatment processes including solution treatment, quenching, controlled stretching, and artificial aging to achieve desired mechanical properties.
Mechanical Properties: Specifies minimum proof stress, tensile strength, elongation at break, and other mechanical values critical for aerospace structural integrity. For example, proof stress is typically above 400 MPa, and tensile strength ranges around 460-495 MPa depending on thickness and testing direction.
Test Methods and Quality Control: References related EN standards (notably EN 4400-1) detailing test sample preparation, dimensional inspections, mechanical testing, stress corrosion resistance, fracture toughness, and marking requirements.
Heat Treatment Conditions: Details precise temperature and time ranges (e.g., 470 °C solution treatment, aging between 115 °C and 175 °C with specified durations) to maintain consistent material performance.
Applications
EN 2687:2004 aluminium alloy AL-P7010- T7451 plates serve in high-performance aerospace structural components where lightweight and high strength are essential. Typical applications include:
- Aircraft fuselage and wing structural members
- Aerospace pressure vessels and bulkheads
- High-strength load-bearing aerospace parts
- Components requiring good fracture toughness and corrosion resistance
By following this standard, manufacturers ensure material consistency, safety, and compliance with aerospace industry regulations, supporting efficient design and manufacturing cycles.
Related Standards
EN 4258: Establishes the general organization of aerospace metallic material standards and defines relationships between different EN standards.
EN 4400-1: Covers technical specifications for aluminium and aluminium alloy wrought products, providing foundational testing and quality assurance requirements referenced extensively in EN 2687.
EN 4500-2: Details rules for drafting and presentation of aerospace metal material standards, ensuring uniformity and clarity in documentation.
Together, these standards create a comprehensive framework for aerospace aluminium alloy materials, supporting manufacturers, designers, and quality assurance professionals in achieving international compliance and material excellence.
