Overview
EN 13042-3:2007/prA1 is a crucial European standard addressing the safety requirements for IS machines used in the manufacture, treatment, and processing of hollow glass. This Type 2 amendment updates and enhances the original EN 13042-3:2007 standard, reflecting the latest safety practices within the glass industry. Developed by CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 151, this standard is aligned with the European Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC and supports manufacturers in complying with essential health and safety regulations.
The scope focuses specifically on significant hazards, hazardous situations, and risk reduction measures relevant to IS (Individual Section) machines, which are essential in automated hollow glass production lines.
Key Topics
This amendment introduces several important changes and clarifications that enhance safety and operator protection during the handling of IS machines:
Hazard Identification and Risk Management
The document clarifies hazards such as noise exposure, moving parts, and unexpected machine movements during molding and processing of hot glass. It underscores reasonable manufacturer foreseeability of misuse and hazardous conditions.Updated Safety Standards References
New normative references replace outdated standards, including:- EN ISO 13849-1:2008 for safety-related control systems
- EN ISO 13850:2008 for emergency stop principles
- EN ISO 3744 / EN ISO 3747 for noise measurement techniques
Control Systems and Emergency Stops
Each IS machine section must be equipped with two-hand control devices, latching stop commands, and emergency-stop equipment meeting high performance levels (PL c or d), ensuring reliable and quick shutdown in emergencies.Noise Emission Limits and Warnings
Detailed provisions require measurement of machine noise levels. If operator noise exposure exceeds 80 dB(A), clear warnings must be provided in the instruction manual to protect hearing.Guards and Access Control
Safeguarding transmission and moving parts through fixed or interlocking guards with robust attachment mechanisms is mandatory to reduce operator risk. Exceptions allowed only under technical constraints.Testing and Verification Methods
The amendment includes a comprehensive testing matrix for verifying safety features, combining visual, functional, and measurement-based inspections to ensure compliance during commissioning and maintenance.Instruction Handbook Requirements
Enhanced documentation requirements specify the inclusion of manufacturer details, machine designation, year of construction, and electrical ratings, improving traceability and user information.
Applications
EN 13042-3:2007/prA1 is directly applicable to:
- Manufacturers and suppliers of IS machines for hollow glass production, allowing them to design safer, compliant machinery.
- Glass manufacturing plants and factories employing IS machine lines, to implement necessary safety controls and maintenance regimes.
- Safety auditors and inspectors assessing machinery compliance with EU legislation.
- Machine operators and maintenance personnel, enabling safer interaction with hot glass processing equipment.
This standard helps mitigate risks of mechanical injury, hearing damage, and operational hazards in industries producing glass containers, bottles, and other hollow glass products.
Related Standards
To ensure comprehensive machine safety, EN 13042-3:2007/prA1 references and aligns with key related standards:
- EN ISO 13849-1:2008 - Safety-related parts of control systems; general design principles
- EN ISO 13850:2008 - Emergency stop device design
- EN ISO 3744 / 3747 - Acoustics and noise emission determination methods
- EN 1050:1996 - Principles for risk assessment
- EN 60204-1:2006 - Safety of electrical equipment on machinery
These interconnected standards form the framework for safe machine design, operation, and maintenance in the hollow glass manufacturing sector.
