Overview
The draft European Standard prEN 14544: Timber structures - Strength graded structural timber with round cross-section - Requirements established by CEN/TC 124 defines the essential requirements for visual strength graded structural timber with round cross-sections. This standard covers timber that is either barked or unbarked, cut to length but otherwise unmachined. The focus lies on timber used in load-bearing applications within the construction industry.
This standard sets out size tolerances, grading characteristics, and conformity evaluation methods for round timber used in structural applications. It excludes timber treated for fire resistance but includes untreated timber or timber treated against biological attack. The document supports compliance with EU regulations, enhancing market uniformity across Europe.
Key Topics
Scope and Application:
- Specifies requirements for visually graded, round structural timber
- Applies to barked or unbarked logs cut to length
- Does not cover fire-retardant treated timber; treatment against biological attack is covered
Dimensions and Tolerances:
- Length deviation: –0/+1%, or –0/+20mm for pieces under 2m
- Diameter deviation (measured under bark): –0/+20 mm
- Reference moisture content set at 20%, with size adjustments specified for moisture variations
Visual Grading and Strength Classification:
- Timber must be visually graded according to standards meeting Annex A requirements
- Characteristic values for bending strength, compression strength, modulus of elasticity, and density must be declared
- Grading takes into account natural growth features such as knots, grain slope, and decay
Physical and Mechanical Properties:
- Use population 5-percentile values for defining characteristic strengths
- Determination methods follow EN 14251 and EN 384 standards
- Natural durability assessed per EN 350-1 and EN 350-2
Evaluation of Conformity:
- Initial type testing and factory production control are mandatory
- Regular monitoring of raw materials, grading accuracy, and dimensional conformity will ensure consistent quality
- Documentation of all test reports and control records for at least five years
Marking Requirements:
- Timber pieces must be clearly marked with producer identification, strength grade, and relevant traceability information
- Proper marking ensures transparency and facilitates quality assurance during construction
Applications
Construction of Timber Frames and Supports:
- Suitable for use in load-bearing timber structures where round timber elements provide strength and aesthetic appeal
- Ensures structural integrity for poles, piles, columns, and beams with round cross-sections
Infrastructure Projects:
- Utilized in bridges, walkways, and outdoor constructions where round timber advantages include durability and natural appearance
- Applicable for untreated timber or biologically treated timber subject to environmental exposure
Engineering and Architectural Design:
- Enables architects and engineers to specify reliable grading and dimensional standards for round timber components
- Facilitates the uniform evaluation of timber quality across EU member states
Timber Manufacturing and Processing:
- Assists producers in verifying compliance with EU standards, streamlining acceptance across various national markets

5 Requirements
5.1 Sizes and tolerances
Length shall be measured using a tape measure complying with ISO 8322-2.
Diameters shall be measured under any bark using calipers. Alternatively, the theoretical diameter may
be calculated from the circumference measured by using a tape measure complying with ISO 8322-2.
Limit For the purposes of this standard the reference moisture content is 20 %. The moisture content
shall be determines according to EN 13183-2.
5.1.1 Deviations
The limit deviations on length is –0/+ 1%; however for length less than 2 m –0/+20 mm.
The limit deviations from the nominal target diameter referred to the reference moisture content and
measured at midspan/midlength under bark is –0/+20 mm.
5.1.2 Changes in size due to changes in moisture content
Unless there is evidence to the contrary, it shall be assumed that the diameter of round timber
increases by 0,25 % for every 1,0 % of moisture content higher than 20 % up to 30 %, and decreases
by 0,25 % for every 1,0 % of moisture content lower than 20 %. The above values are typical, without
regard to species.

Annex A. and have characteristic values for bending strength, compression strength, modulus of
elasticity amd density determined according to the appropriate clause in EN 14251.
Unless otherwise stated, 20 % moisture content shall be taken as the reference point for all
measurements.
5.2.2 Characteristic values
The producer shall declare characteristic values for the bending strength, compression strength,
modulus of elasticity in bending (5-percentile and mean value) and density. The declared values shall
not be greater than characteristic values found from results from testing untreated timber according to
EN 14251 evaluated in accordance with EN 384.

with EN 13501-1.
6 Evaluation of conformity
6.1 General
Compliance with the requirement of this standard shall be demonstrated by:
- initial type testing and initial assessment,
- factory production control by the producer.

taken into account.
Whenever a change occurs, e.g. in raw materials, which would change significantly one or more
