Overview
EN 15207:2014 specifies interoperability requirements for plug/socket connections and 24 V supply characteristics used on tanks for the transport of dangerous goods. It covers the electrical interface between tractor/trailer and transport tank/trailer for operation in potentially explosive (hazardous) atmospheres and defines both the non‑interruptible (Type A) and interruptible (Type S) supplies. The standard also provides provisions for future data‑transfer connections while excluding functions covered by other truck–trailer standards (e.g. ISO 12098, ISO 7638‑1).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Supply types and ratings
- Two supplies defined: Supply Type A (designed to remain active in hazardous areas) and Supply Type S (designed to be switched off in hazardous areas).
- Nominal voltage: 24 V DC. Both supplies are to be fused for explosion protection with 5 A fuses.
- Connector design
- 15‑pin plug/socket configuration with a fixed pin assignment. Example functions include RS‑485 primary data lines (pins 1–3), RS‑232/CAN secondary data lines (pins 5–8) and dedicated pins for Supply Type A (pin 9, 13) and Supply Type S (pins 4, 6).
- Mechanical keying and a captive, self‑locking screw (M4×16) to prevent accidental disconnection; insertion of a mismatching connector (≤ 1 000 N) must not create electrical contact.
- Current per non‑power pin limited to < 4 A.
- Hazardous‑area compliance
- Equipment category 2, gas group IIC, temperature class T6. Conformance to EN 60079‑0 and EN 60079‑7 with isolation requirements per EN 60079‑7 (DC voltages ≤ 60 V).
- Operational range & testing
- Ambient range: −40 °C to +60 °C.
- Tests referenced: ISO 12098, EN ISO 8092‑2, ISO 16750‑3, EN 60079‑7, and mismatching test per ISO 4091.
- Marking
- Type plate information per EN 60079‑0 and EN 15207; warning signage for connection/disconnection in hazardous areas as required by EN 60079‑7.
Applications and users
- Intended for tank manufacturers, trailer/tractor OEMs, electrical/system integrators, fleet operators, installers, test laboratories and certification bodies involved in the design, manufacture, installation and maintenance of service equipment on vehicles transporting dangerous goods.
- Typical use cases: power and data interfaces for overfill prevention, product recognition devices, cabin service equipment and trailer-mounted control systems where safe operation in explosive atmospheres is required.
